I had my TAH on Monday, and have not had a bowel movement--Is this normal? I hurt so bad, and feel so much like I need to but cant. I woke up an hour ago in a cold sweat, feeling like I wanted to pass out and throw up at the same time--I think it is because I need to go so bad. Can I give myself an enema? Is there any reason not to? I took stool softeners 3 days before surgery and the last three days since being home. Help!

Nelly, This seems to be a problem with almost everyone. I had a LAVH/Bso 7/9/01 and had the same thing going on. It was well over a week before I went. I was takeing stool softners also. You need to drink lots of water and move around as much as you can. I would not take a enema before talking with Dr. first. Try some prune juice if you can stand it. To be honest nothing worked for me. I think pain meds are a big part of it.When you stop them it will help. I only needed mine 3 days after I was home. But it still takes a while to get back to normal. This was the worst part for me. It will get better. Hang in there and keep us posted. Remember to drink as much as you can.

Dear Nelly:

You are not alone.... It was 6 days before I could go and it was very uncomfortable. I was only on clear liquids and thought I needed to eat... when I started to eat soft foods, I was able to go with much pain and difficulty. When I finally went... I had quite a time regulating everything. It took a good 4 weeks for me to settle down and not cry when going.

Have you tried warm drinks..... tea really helped me? I walked back and forth and tried to move around to get things going.

Give it time... it will get better.

Hi Nelly, I think that many of us can sympathize with you as we went through it too.....definitely no fun! After my surgery, it was 9 days before I was able to go

I would suggest you contact your Dr. prior to using an enema, just to be on the safe side. Also, the other ladies have given great advice, lots of water and juices and walking will all help. My Dr. had me take stool softeners twice a day for the first few weeks.

Call your Dr. today. If the office is closed and you get the answering service, request a call back. I'm sure that the Dr. won't mind and can tell you what you should do. I'd hate to see you continue to suffer if it's unnecessary.

Best wishes and 's
