Post-Op: Post-op bleeding? How long?

Hello Sisters, You have not clue how happy I am to be sitting and writing to you. I had a really difficult time with my surgery (11/13, TAH BSO), and some serious compliations, but I don't want to frighten any ladies in waiting into thinking my situation was normal. I had a real heavy period the weekend before surgery and lost a lot of blood. That coupled with some internal bleeding following surgery meant I needed three units on 11/15. I also went in with a head cold (that I didn't tell anyone about). The result - serious shortness of breath due to a partially collapsed lung. My four-day event turned into a nine-day ordeal, with five differentspecialists (from respiratory to cardiac). What a ride. But it's over, I'm home, and under the best possible care from DH and DD. I have a question - how long does the sustained bleeding continue? My MD checked me daily in hospital and said this is normal, but with my low blood count, shortness of breath, etc., I'm a little concerned. I'm constantly exhausted, even following a four-hour nap. It's now 11 days post op. I see my MD Tuesday (two-week F/U, I think because of the complications - I expected to see him in four). Even with what I've gone through, I envision a bright future, and I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. I didn't write today to fuss or whine, but to ask about the bleeding. Thought the background would help explain my concerns. Thanks for reading. Best to you all.

What an ordeal

Penny,

You've been through a lot! Wow! I'm a LIW, so I don't know how long the bleeding will continue. Maybe you need to post this on the post-op message board. The ladies there probably have a better idea on that.

Rest, rest, rest. Just concentrate on getting better. Sure hope they have you on some good antibiotics!

Best of luck,
Beth

Sweetie, My heart goes out ot you as I had complications and know that tired, awful feeling!
It is normal though! And will go away in time! We had extra stuff with our bodies.....it takes them awhile to let us up again! Please be patient with yourself, and just keep resting. One of these days it will all turn around and you will wake up and go "WOW>...I really feel good!"
I am hoping you are on a good iron supplement! I picked a not so good one and my body was not absorbing it so well....the fatigue jsut hung on till the dr said switch!

Then keep resting and listening to your body. I stopped smoking at the same time, and know about the pneumonia/collapsed lung thing! It will wear you out for quite some time. It is almost 8 weeks for me,and I am still geting tired when I do heavy cleaning or too much walking. Still get sore and have the infernal aches and swelling. But it will all go away!
Please take care and let me know how you are!
God be with you!
Love and hugs'
Peanut
A good big steak did wonders to make me feel better! Ate them for the first 4 weeks! Wow! For a couple of hours after each---I was flying and happy! Lots of broccolli (if you can handle the gas), and dark leafy green vegies....lots of fruit and papaya! All good sources for our needs.
Silly me.....Just realized....bleeding can last up to 6 weeks just like post baby births.

Post-Op: Post-op bleeding? How long?

Hi..when I went for my 2 week post-op checkup, my doctor told me the bleeding could last up to 6 weeks..which is where I"m at now. I had spotting up till week 4.
With time :time2: you will gradually stop bleeding. It really is quite an individual thing.
