Burch Procedure and Suprapubic Catheter

Hi everyone,

I am scheduled for a TAH/BSO and Burch Procedure on Tues, Nov. 27th. I was curious - How common is it to come home from the Burch Procedure with a suprapubic catheter? I don't know if I will have one or not, but I guess I probably will. I was just wondering how many people had one when they had the burch procedure, and how long was it left in?

Burch Procedure and Suprapubic Catheter

Hi, Lisa!
Congrats on your date for your crowning!

Haven't had experience with the burch procedure, but you may want to do a search here and see what turns up. The sisters here are so open and honest with their experiences, I'm sure there are many posts that you'll find helpful.

You may also try researching the procedure at other medical sites. I found www.webmd.com helpful in my pre-op research. If they're not as helpful as you need, try other sites in your browser search engine.

You sound ready for your big day! Prayers for you to speed you on your way to a quick and uneventful recovery!

burch and catheter

I'm scheduled for a TAH with Burch on Nov 27. My dr said that in 10 years he's never had a patient leave the hospital with a catheter. Of course he said that some day he expects that this could happen also. He said he usually removes it on the second day post op and then retrains the bladder on the third day of castle stay. I'm sure hoping that this is the way it goes because leaving the castle with a bag strapped to your leg sounds down right awful. Good luck!

Burch Procedure and Suprapubic Catheter

Hi Lisa

My TAH/Burch was done on a Monday. I had my catheter removed on Thursday morning in the castle. Was up and using the bathroom on my own about an hour later, and had no problems. Got discharged that afternoon and came home.

Hope it works out as well for you !

Thank you so much. That gives me hope that I might not have to come home with the catheter. I thought it was a given. Can't wait to be on the other side.

Good luck for your up coming surgery, you will be fine.
I have no help for you concerning the Burch procedure. But did have a 2 hour bladder repair, I had a prolapsed uterus and bladder and my bladder was growning into the vaginal wall. I came home with a nornal foley cath, but after 2 weeks with no sign of the bladder working I was taken to theatre and had a supra pubic catheter put in. I kept that for another 5 weeks. I am very very RARE so PLEASE do not let this make you panic and think it will happen to you. My surgeon told me that I made medical history by having kept it for the longest time she has ever known.
I just wanted to let you know that the supra pubic caths are more comfortable to have. You can at least sit better with them, and they are not as irratating to the uretha as the uretha is free from tubes. Another good thing about them is that you can clamp and try to void without having them pulled in and out like the foley ones.
Good luck to you, hey chances are if you do have to have one it should be only a couple of days by reading other posts on this.
Love and Hugs Vicki
