9 days till my surgery.. I am really scared now.

Hello to everyone.... I am 30 years old and I am having a hysterectomy on 5-23-11. I have a 4.4 cm fibroid on my cervix. One Dr was unable to find it on the ultrasound. I went to another Dr (something that I never do) and she found it vaginally and during the ultrasound. I cried tears of joy when she said that she found it and that the fibroid had to come out.
Here is the kicker- of course I couldn't be normal.... My cervix is stuck and I will learn when I wake up in the recovery room if I will have to have adominal hysterectomy or laparascopic. I am nervous, scared and daily I am turning mean.. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to handle this? Have any of you been told this ?

I think pretty much every laparscopic procedure can become an abdominal one depending on how things go. My doc initially said mine would have to be abdominal, but then decided to try LAVH--and succeeded. But I always knew I wouldn't know for certain until I woke up. I was prepared for the worst, and hoping for the best. Hang in there, you'll be on the road to recovery soon.

Iamjan- thank you sooo much... that has given me hope! I pray for the laprascopic or even the vaginal.... but like you said... prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

My doctor planned to do a TVH but told me he could convert to an abdominal if he had to. It seems to be pretty standard practice. I just mentally prepared for both procedures while hoping for the TVH. I awoke with no incision so the TVH was successful. I wish you best!

Hi there! I also had a fibroid that had to be removed..it was pushing on my already enlarged uterus..
but post-op..and here I am with only 2 (compared to the possible 4) small incisions and the rest was done vaginally. Not that an abdominal scar would have mattered - I'm far past the bikini stage in life (did I ever have one???)..but just think of the dr having to do what is necessary to GET YOU BETTER!...and then scars won't matter..they more often choose the less invasive way.

OK so I guess I really don't know all the kinds of hysterectomies. Sounds like you can get everything out vaginally and have no scars at all? I had laproscopic vaginal. So I have 5 small scars across my belly and they took stuff out vaginally. They got a 5cm by 7cm ovarian cyst out that way. I got everything out, cervix, uterus, ovaries and tubes. I was actually thinking that if I had been worried about scars that the abdominal might have been better? I mean if its horizontal and low enough it would be hidden by a bikini bottom. So MAYBE just MAYBE if there's something good about abdominal that is it?

You'll be so happy to "be on the other side". You can do this !!! I am still in shock that I don't need pads, tampons or Aleve or Tylenol !!! it really is nice.

My largest fibroid (1lb) was growing into my rectum and intestines--which made it more challenging for the docs, but they still managed to get it done LAVH--so, keep on keepin on. Whatever happens, you'll bounce back

Many of us go into surgery not knowing for sure the procedure they will have to do. My Doc told me if she couldn't do it Div that she would have to remove all the belly fat in my abdomen and do a tummy tuck. (more like a pleat!!) My family all thought I should press her to do that one. Two for the price of one. But the recovery was 8 days in the hospital as opposed to 1. I prayed that she would be able to do it with the robot and not have an incision from hip to hip. I lucked out and she was able to do it with the robot. My DD still think I should have had the belly fat removed but me, I glad it went the way it did. I am well on my way to recovery, now. The DR will do what is the best for you. Just prepare in your head for either process. It's not half as bad as you are thinking.
