Continue HRT?

I am a year post op. 6 weeks post op I got put on Estradorb. It's a lotion low dose estrogen which absorbed in my light colored pants and destroyed them. Black is my new pants of choice. I had no problems at all other than that with HRT. I'm at high risk for breast cancer and am 38 years old and am being monitored for breast changes. I recently lost health insurance. I have a few questions. Is there generic estrogen? I got switched to premarin .625 mg. It's not generic! I found out when I picked it up yesterday. I called the doctor specifically to be switched to a generic. Another question is if it's a breast cancer risk and the only reason I can see that I'm taking it is because I'm young and have no ovaries cervix or uterus and the doctor is concerned for osteoporosis. The 1st 6 weeks post op the only surgical menopause problems I had was 2 small hot flashes and insomnia.... Both I could deal with if need be. I can't afford an extra bill a month for this medication. How bad could it be just to go off it. I've gained 30 pounds since surgery after loading 70 prior. I was told weight gain is almost a given with HRT. I feel bad about how I look now and am disappointed in myself. I figure if I go off HRT it would help in that area as well. I eat healthy because I'm on weight watchers as well as walk a mile and a half every day however still packed weight on.... Just misserable.... Any words of advice?

Re: Continue HRT?

Yes, there is generic Estrogen. It costs about $4 for a 30 day supply at most pharmacies.

Weight gain is NOT a given with Hrt. IMHO that is an urban myth. What causes weight gain is a hormone imbalance, which can include thyroid issues. Too often women will blame the ert they are taking, but it could be a myriad of things cause the weight gain. Not being on the right dose, not using the right method for you, thyroid and other hormones can go out of whack also. Too much as well as too little estrogen can cause weight gain too. It is all about balance. And menopause can cause a shift in our metabolism. There are two good articles about this at www.hormonejungle.com

Re: Continue HRT?

Ty.... I have to call Monday to see if they will actually call in a generic this time..... What have you heard good or bad about going off estrogen completely? And taking nothing or over the counter stuff?

Re: Continue HRT?

Today is my first day taking the premarin and I feel tired and have a headache.... I had no problems on the Estradorb just cost way too much out of pocket.... As far as weight gain I try hard with no success and I did it before a year ago before my hysterectomy but just can't seem to do it again.... Frustration overload...

Re: Continue HRT?

I have not ever considered going without. It took me too long to find this place called balance. Maybe one day I will consider stopping, but for now I continue using my ert with my doctor's blessing.

Re: Continue HRT?

Update: my doctor isn't comfortable putting me on anything oral.... Hence no generic. What he decided is to keep me on the Estrasorb however instead of using 2 packets a day ( one on each thigh) I'm down to splitting 1 packet a day between the 2 thighs. This way the script will last longer. I have been doing that a week now with still no menopause symptoms. Yahh! I actually feel better because I also started taking kelp on my own. I'm sleeping well, I have more energy, I'm not as achey, or fatigued, I'm in a better mood dispite everything going crazy around me, in general just more comfortable. Not sure if it's the lower hormone or the kelp but I'm not going to complain.... Now if I can just drop like 50 lbs I'd be estatic!
