Re: When does surgical Menopause hit?

For me it was around days 10-14. Let me tell you, I was not prepared. I turned 28 two days prior to my surgery and suddenly my poor husband thought he was married to a woman almost twice that.

Re: When does surgical Menopause hit?

My symptoms - night sweats and hot flashes - started day after surgery. I had very high levels of estrogen prior to surgery. Mood swings started about two weeks after. Things tapered off once the hormones were adjusted and I was fine at 6 - 8 weeks post op. I was on estrogen for three years with no problems. Went off estrogen last summer and was fine until April. Hot flashes and sleep issues returned then but with another tweak of the hormones, I'm good as gold again. Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question. Ask us. Ask your doc. Ask. Ask. Ask. Knowledge is a powerful thing!

Re: When does surgical Menopause hit?

I had high levels before surgery and crashed 24 hours after surgery. The mood swings were so bad the first 5 -6 years. I rarely cried before surgery and cried all the time after for about 5 - 6 years. I had hot flashes for about 2 years before surgery and still have them today but not as intense. I get night sweats about 3 or 4 times a night/week. My sex life is down to nothing. I still have booth ovaries though I still get bad cysts on my right one at least 3 or 4 times a year. I was sick for 4 months after surgery and the Dr. didn't know what was wrong with me. It took a toll on us financially. Thank god my husband and childern have been supportive through all of this. this doesn't just take a toll on the woman but the whole family. I had my surgery 2/02 I was 41 yrs old. I'm now 49 and the Dr. still tells me I'm in peri menapause.

Re: When does surgical Menopause hit?

It was about 6-7 months before the hot flashes and TERRIBLE mood swings I cried continuously all day!! It was awful, but with a small daily dose of hormones it's pretty manageable. I get a hot flash very rarely and night sweats maybe a couple times a month.

Re: When does surgical Menopause hit?

I had hot flashes the day after surgery. I have been on 0.45 mg of estrogen daily ever since and I have had no menopause symptoms at all. Headaches gone. Mood swings gone. Irritability gone. Skin clear. Got 5 pounds I can't lose but that's it. I'm 1.5 years post op. I still keep wondering when it will hit and it just hasnt. I look back on the experience as one of the best decisions of my life. Hope you have the same great result.

Re: When does surgical Menopause hit?

Thank you all for you input. Even though I haven't had any signs of menopause, I went on 0.5 oral Estrace yesterday. I told my doctor I wanted to start on the lowest dosage. I think it is easier to increase a dosage should symptoms sneak up, than go down if the dosage is too high. Still feel great - I've lost 20 pounds since my surgery (two weeks). Mind you my fibroids had my uterus at 16 weeks and that didn't include the 20cm tumor on the outside. I don't look any different except my belly is flat again, my bras fit, and my skin is back to clear.

Exclamation - When does surgical Menopause hit? Re: When does surgical Menopause hit?

I had a LAH in 2008 and kept one ovary. About 6 months after surgery, I noticed acne, hair loss, irritability and night sweats. They vanished after about a month or so. In the past eight months, I have at least six hot flashes per day, insomnia, and periodic irritability. All together, the hot flashes are the worst.

My physician continues to check my hormone levels, but I'm told that I'm not in menopause yet!? Anyway, I'm using the tools here on HysterSisters, and other books to help me with the transition. Thank you for allowing me to finally talk about this. By the way, I cannot take hormones, as I'm a two-time cancer survivor.

Re: When does surgical Menopause hit?

I started having hot flashes after a few weeks. They were bad for a while (10-12 during the day), but they seem to have subsided somewhat. The bad emotional stuff hit me later, triggered by the emotions surrounding my internal rads. I hate it. I've never been an emotional person and now I have nearly daily crying jags, depression, and anger. It is by far the worst part of this whole experience, including having cancer.
