Horrible acne - what the heck is going on????

Hi everyone,

I'm Jenny, I'm 37 and it's been 14 months since my TAH. I still have my ovaries so I wasn't worried about immediately going into menopause, but I think it may have started. I've had some nasty night sweats and absolutely horrific acne. Has anyone else experienced this and do you have any treatment suggestions??

It started in January and I thought it was just stress from starting college again, but it hasn't let up and I can't find a solution. Oh my gosh, it's absolutly horrible!!! I had your typical case of acne when I was a teenager but this is way worse. All over my neck, jawline, chin, all along the hairline and even all over my scalp. These are painful too and sometimes really large and they don't go away. Neutrogena Stress Relief products helped when I first started using them, but it didn't take long for that to stop working either.

I don't know what to do. I have sensitive skin so a lot of the heavier duty acne medications dry my skin out terribly. When my daughter was trying Proactiv a couple years ago, I'd tried that but it also dried my skin out.

It's incredibly embarrassing to be 37 and having skin problems like this. I hardly want to be seen. I'll be back on campus in the fall and I would love to have this under control. It's so embarrassing to walk around a bunch of 18-23 year olds and have skin that feels 100x worse than theirs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you!

Re: Horrible acne - what the heck is going on????

We are in the same boat! I still have one ovary puttering along and just went to my doctor two days ago because of acne so bad it is worse than anything I had as a teen, even!

I had hot flashes and some other problems that started a few months back, none of which bothered me at all...the weight gain around my middle was annoying, but when the acne got uncontrollable - that's when I went in! :-)

Anyway, I am about to post to learn more (it is sooooo confusing) but from what I can tell searching around on the internet and from what my doctor said, a drop in estrogen can cause testosterone to become raised or dominant or something and this can cause acne.

My doctor put me on premarin. I am sure I won't see results for a while. My GP also gave me retin-A (I saw him on the same day) and recommended clarisonic, which I think I am going to buy despite the price as I am desperate. I just turned 45 and this is just insane.

Just when you think this whole mess couldn't get more frustrating! :-) Good luck!
