Estring anyone??

I had a complete hysterectomy 2 weeks ago - at 30. It was necessary. Anywho, I was on Climara and other than the patch not sticking, I was having horrible issues with hot flashes. My physician has suggested that I try the Estring. I have done Internet research, but was looking for first hand accounts as to wether it not, or how well this works? Anyone, please??!!

Re: Estring anyone??

Hello!

If your doctor is suggesting that you use Estring in place of Climara, more than likely you aren't going to be happy with the change. Estring is meant for treating vaginal dryness/atrophy rather than for systemic symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, etc. It's a lower dose of estrogen and isn't meant to be used for treating systemic symptoms of surgical menopause. Also, being newly post-op I would think the "nothing in the vagina" rule would apply during early recovery.

There is an estrogen ring you can ask your doctor about that is meant for systemic symptoms rather than local. It's called Femring. Like Estring, it's a vaginal ring which is inserted and left in place for up to 3 months of continuous release of estrogen. Again, in my opinion it's not a good option for the early weeks of recovery--not until you're fully healed.

If you're having trouble keeping the Climara patches in place and are following the directions for keeping them on (How Can I Keep My Estrogen Patch On Until It's Time To Change It? ) , ask your doctor about switching to Vivelle Dot. It's also bio-identical estrogen but instead of having to stay on for a week, Vivelle Dot is changed every 3 1/2 days. I use it myself and am very happy with it. Consider asking your doctor for free samples before committing to a full prescription.

I hope this helps!

Re: Estring anyone??

I have found that doctors frequently confuse the 2 rings. They talk about Estring when they mean Femring and vice versa.

I have used Femring in the past - it was a great source of systemic estrogen but didn't last the 3 months it's supposed to for me. My dr prescribed Estring later, to replace Vagifem but the copay was out of my budget so I didn't fill the prescription.
