Lightbulb - Could it just be menopause symptoms & not clinical depression? Could it just be menopause symptoms & not clinical depression?

I ve been taking depression meds for a yr and been suicidal for a few months, just thoughts, not real attempts,I knew when I began these, which the psychiatrist did not inform me, that these meds do cause suicidal feelings at the beginning of treatment but since being on these Ive been low all the time, I got so many symptoms on the menopause list...I am now doubting I have actual clinical depression, just changes going on.I mean the stresses of life, kids, single mom, the cancer and full hysterectomy, I can see this causing me depression, but I doubt now that it maybe just the symptoms instead.
The doctor changed the meds I was on cause I should'nt still feel depressed taking anti depressants that defeats the purpose..I am thinking now Ive wasted a yr of my life thinking I will go crazy one day- psychotic and go to a mental ward.See these doctors over here get a % of the meds they RX and long as they can keep patients hooked on these things they rolling in dough.
The meds I am on now help relieve some symptoms but to sit around with ideas of hurting myself is not like me,Ive got two wonderful children and I did not need chemo after surgery.
So as they say to judge if you are clinically depressed it has to be a certain amount of time (2 weeks) feeling certain symptoms,of course I feel these but some I do not,and these what I do have is on the meno list...today my brain is the clearest Ive felt in ages, no fog, no darkness just now questioning my condition.
So I wondered if you ladies have been told this as well that you had clinical depression and or severe bipolar??
I am not bi polar...I often feel down because of my lifes situation...my faith in God is increasing and believing in Him to see me through it all.

Re: Could it just be menopause symptoms & not clinical depression?

I think being depressed can be a menopausal symptom or menopause can make depression worse. Have you talked to your GYN about HRT, or is that forbidden due to the cancer? If you are allowed to try it in addition to the psych meds you could see if it helped. I've personally had depression plus menopause symptoms and been treated for both, I do think treating menopause symptoms helped the depression a bit but surely was not the whole answer. I'm sorry your meds aren't working, I hope new ones help. If not, sometimes a psychiatrist who specializes in depression helps. I hope you get relief soon.
