Menopause Question

I am only 26 and my hysterectomy is the 15th or Sept. After my hysterectomy will I go into menopause? And how long will it last? These are questions that I have for my doctor but I really want to know now! I dont want to wait two weeks until my pre op appointment. I feel like I need to prepare myself I guess.

Re: Menopause Question

It depends if you keep your ovaries or not.

I kept both mine and I am doing great, no menopause.

Re: Menopause Question

If you don't keep your ovaries you will go into instant surgical menopause. Your body will have some estrogen stored so you may not begin to show signs of menopause for a few weeks.

Some women are on hrt all their lives, some can stop them down the road, everyone is different. That's going to be a wait and see how you do kind of thing.

Good luck and take care.

Re: Menopause Question

PinkLondon -

It says in your information that you will have both ovaries removed so you will go into surgical menopause when they are removed.

You may not be symptomatic it depends on stored estrogen. However at your age you need to talk to your Dr. about hormone therapy since lowered estrogen puts you at risk of osteoporosis and heart disease (all possibilities after natural menopause).

If you go to the Video section (see the menus under the tabs in the upper right) and look for the category on Surgical Menopause and HRT that might give you some information. As well check out the Hormone menu (top of the screen) for additional information that could help you.
