what to expect during and after?

I had a few questions about having a LAVH/BSO. First off I am not positive that is what I should be calling my surgery, because my surgeon was calling it a TLH, but then went on to say she would be removing the uterus etc through my vagina whole hopefully, sooo...not sure whether that is a LAVH (I think it is) or a TLH, but either way, that is how she is doing it, unless all goes horribly wrong and she has to do abdominal- which she did warn could happen, but hopefully not. Anyway, my question is (are) 1) Does everyone that has a LAVH have to get a cath? and 2) Does everyone that has a LAVH stay overnight in hospital? 3.)The doctor said I should be all recovered in 2 weeks, but might still be exhuasted, 20% of her patients are, so- I have a very physical job-rest. manager of a quick service italian rest. lots of lifting, running around, on my feet 10-12 hours a day..etc- should I stick with the 4-6 wks I told them originally or downgrade? BTW, I am getting
I am a little worried about not getting questions answered b/f surgery -and I have lots more, because my surgeon said "my nurse will call you with a definite date, but within a month if not sooner, and dont take any asprin or advil type drugs two weeks b/f surgery". Was that my preop appt? I hope not, it was only supposed to be the decision appt. There had better be more info available than that..little weirded out by whole experience. Anywho...those are a few question I thought someone might know answer to.

Re: what to expect during and after?

I had my LAVH on July 11th. I can answer some of your questions based on my experience. 1) I had a cath during surgery which was removed once I got to the recovery room. No complications. 2) My surgery started at 11 a.m. and I was home by 5 the same day. 3) Not sure about being completely recovered in 3 weeks. Yes I was exhausted but I was will tender and I was not released back to work until after 3 weeks, with the restrictions of: NO lifting, No bending ect. I am going on 8 weeks now and was released to do light lifting and stuff at 7 weeks. I don't think that was your pre-op appt and if you don't hear back from them soon I would be calling them to set up an appointment to go in and talk about everything. Write your questions down so you don't forget them. Keep us posted and good luck.

Re: what to expect during and after?

i had a vaginal hyst on july 12. my surgery was at nine, i was out by 10:20. cath was put in just before surgery, (i was not awake) and taken out soon after surgery.

i never had the swollen belly. was a bit sore (turned out to be a low grade infection) but not until week 3. stitches were not completely disolved until about week six or seven. went back to work with lifting restrictions at 3 weeks.

i have a pretty sedentary job, so this was not a big issue for me. released to do whatever i wanted at 5 weeks. was tired for about 3 days, at which time i woke up mostly and functioned as my normal, but still tired earlier in the day than i normally would.

had discharge for 5 weeks until the infection cleared, then nothing. never did bleed vaginally after surgery.

overall, my expereince was what i think to be about pretty normal with the exception of the infection (which i did not develope until week 3, and only after i had outercourse using a lubricant that may have been contaminated.

i do not regret having this surgery at all, it was not really painful at all.

i would take the 4 weeks off you told you bosses. even if done vaginally, there are stitches to disolve, and incisions to heal.

Re: what to expect during and after?

I am having TLH sept 9 and my doctor told me a catheter would go in while I'm under and come out before recovery. He had also said I could go back to work in a week. It has been really confusing read all the forums because I now think my doctor is crazybut i would call and make sure your questions are answered good luck to you.

Re: what to expect during and after?

Hi, I had a vaginal hysterectomy, 2 weeks to recover your doctor is nuts, my doctor told me without knowing what my job is 8 weeks off work. Then he told me (as I work in a daycare) no lifting any children for quite a while after that. I am 3 weeks post op and I would cry if I had to go back to work right now. Plan for a minimum of 6.

Re: what to expect during and after?

you should definitely have a pre-op appointment. I went in with 3 pages of questions. My doc said an overnite sty for monitoring and at least 4 weeks out of work. No lifting, squating, bending...pretty much anything. Im scheduled for the 7th. Goo luck to everyone!

Re: what to expect during and after?

My doctor said since I have a desk job that if I absolutely had to - I could go back after a week. I was able to take 2 1/2 weeks off. That first week home I was feeling really good - it was week 2 that I felt kind of poopy. I was glad I didn't have my "babysitters" that week so I didn't feel like I needed to be entertaining.

I had a cath. Mine didn't come out until the next morning. I was glad of that so I didn't have to get up and down to go to the bathroom after having pushed my morphine button. My surgery was scheduled for 10 am but didn't go in until after 12. I was out of recovery and in a room by 4 and was released the next morning by 12.

Your pre-op visit will answer alot of your questions.

Re: what to expect during and after?

Hi Ladies- I know that BSO means he will remove your fallopian tubes and ovaries also. I am having LAVH/BSO and i am wondering the same thing about recovery. I have a toddler at home and it worries me, everyone heals differently and i guess i just have to wait to see how i feel. I am going to have the house cleaned from top to bottom, DH will have to take over when i am recovering....all i can do is hope everything goes smoothly. I had my gallbladder out Laparoscopically and the recovery time was not bad, i hear it is similar...the only thing is that i did not have a toddler to lug around, now i do...so i am very nervous about that. Good luck to you!

Re: what to expect during and after?

I had a vaginal hysterectomy July 26th and kept both ovaries. I teach and my doc told me to take 6 weeks. No matter what kind of surgery you have it is a major surgery. Just because you cannot see most of the stitches, does not mean they aren't there. I worked many restaurant jobs in the past and I will tell you that there is no way I would have been ready to return to working in a restaurant in 2 weeks! I took 4 weeks and I am very glad that I did. I feel better than I have in many years. If you can swing it I would take at least 4 weeks if not more.I was not released to lift anything over 5lbs until 4 weeks.

As far as the cath I am not sure why this would worry you. It is really no big deal. It will help you out because you will not have to get up to use the toilet. They left mine in for 24 hours which was when I was released form the hospital. It never caused any pain or discomfort, even upon removal. The worst part was getting the sticky tape they used to secure it to my leg off
