Re: surgery a week away, start of head cold :(

You seem to be doing the right things. All I would add would be some Vitamin C. I have sinus problems so I am alway congested or have a runny nose and so forth. My Dr. told me as long as I wasn't running a fever and had no lung infection it wouldn't cause a problem with surgery. If you are really concerned give your Dr. a call just to inform them of the head cold and they will advise you further. Feel better soon and good luck.

I would say that if there is no sign of an actual infection then you would be fine, especially since it is a whole week away. Just use a ton hand sanitizer and like she said above, lots of vitamin C. It is also a good idea to check with your doctor in case it gets worse and maybe they can give you an antibiotic to help clear it up beforehand if it is an actual infection. Good Luck!!!!

Re: surgery a week away, start of head cold :(

Give your doctor a call as soon as possible and be careful taking any medicines/herbs/vitamins, etc this close to your surgery without your doctor's approval. Your doctor may be able to prescribe something to help you knock it out. We are all different but I was once of those who was not allowed vitamin c for two weeks before my surgery. Be sure to give your doctor a call. In the meantime, drink plenty of fluids, have some chicken soup and I'm sending !

Re: surgery a week away, start of head cold :(

I had the same thing happen! I went to my doctor and his advice was:

sudafed every 4 hours
Mucinex every 12 hours
Neti pot 2 - 3 times a day

Plus I take a zyrtek once a day for allergies already

I was still stuffed up when I went in - but they continued to give me the mucinex and zyrtek while in the castle and it was never an issue.

The big thing is to keep it from going into your lungs.

Call your doctor and see if they need to see you or if they have some recommendations. You don't want to take anything before surgery without letting them know.

Re: surgery a week away, start of head cold :(

Hi, if you are still feeling sick a couple days before your surgery you should let your doctor know mine said point blank" I will not operate if you are even slightly unwell" of course I understand if you are not well worse complications can arise so why take the chance I would not you have 1 life and no second chances, if cancellation is what you have to do then do it. I hope you recover before but if not it is not the end of the world.

Re: surgery a week away, start of head cold :(

Hi there! Glad to hear you're feeling better already. I thought I'd post because just today at my pre-op exam, they told me that if I *do* have a cold or sore throat at the time of my surgery (two weeks out still), they'll still go ahead and do it, they'll just give me an extra dose of antibiotics beforehand.

Also, most surgeons give you a dose or two of antibiotics during surgery anyway, and possibly even after.

The bottom line will be up to your own doctor, of course, and I wish you all the best!
