Two weeks out from TAH and very depressed

I had a total hysterectomy including ovaries on Aug. 12th followed by emergent gallbladder removal 10 days later. I had the hysterectomy done due to a myriad of reasons to include PCOS, pre diabetes, painful cycles, no cycles, heavy bleeding etc. I became consumed with pain & agony sometimes with a cycle and more often than not without.

I am 39 & the mother of 2 great kids. I have a wonderful husband who is very supportive. I also have a FT, very stressful job & at the moment I am on medical leave.

It is hard for to put into words what I am feeling but I am very depressed to the point that it is hard for me to get out of bed. It is really scaring me as I have never been a depressed person. My doc. had me on the Vivelle Dot .1 until yesterday. I called his office and got in yesterday afternoon. After talking with me thru my sobbing he asked me if I was having hot flashes & I told him yes and that I felt anxious too and felt like I wanted to jump out of my skin. He then told me my Estrogen was still too low then and took me off the Vivelle and gave me a shot of Estrogen. He says this should work very soon for me and that he would see me in one weeks time. He did tell me to call his office and let them know how I was doing today. I do not feel any different. I woke up about 12:30 this am in a panic and could not go back to sleep. I am so depressed and I feel like I am drowning. I do not want to talk with anyone that calls, cannot face going back to work etc. I just want to be me again and I am desperate.

Re: Two weeks out from TAH and very depressed

hi, i'm sorry you are feeling so bad, but i understand completely.

Apart from the wonderful ladies here, no one else at home, family, friends, really understand how we feel. Not my girlfriends of 20 years, not my DH, not my father, not my older female relatives too.

They haven't got a clue the psychological, hormonal impact the operation had on us.

i am thankful to God for sending me a lady who had gone thru this operation. She had ovca and is a 12 year survivor NED. Strong lady, and healthier than her peers now. She goes travelling all the time. i try to focus on getting there one day. She told me she overcame it by clinging onto Jesus. I do too. Every minute.

For inspiration you may want to google and read OzBron story in medhelp. She lost her ovaries but continued worklife as per normal. She kept her uterus and had a bb from donor eggs.

Look at the other wonderful ladies here.......focus on them....we will get through this one day (crossing fingers)

Take Care

Re: Two weeks out from TAH and very depressed

I am so sorry to hear how tough this is for you. I imagine you feel out of control which is very scary for us.

I had no clue what was going on with me after surgery. My emotions were all over the place and I didn't feel I had a true grip on reality. I'm pretty strong so I pushed through it but I am not saying it's easy. I also had a demanding job and ended up quitting. That turned out to be the best thing for me but at the time, I questioned it because I knew I wasn't myself.

Continue to seek your doctor's help until you get to where you can at least feel somewhat normal. However, keep in mind that it can take several months to get back to being yourself. Possibly a year or more. But that doesn't mean that it will continue to be like it is right now. It improves slowly.

Try getting through this one hour at a time. Focus each hour on something that calms you. I spent the majority of my days on here reading and reaching out for comfort.

One last thing, your surgery was only a couple of weeks ago. That is very, very early in the recovery process. Don't expect too much out of yourself. You need to rest and relax. I think we all expect to be healed much sooner than is realistic. You had 2 surgeries. Your body is confused and so are your hormones.

You will make it through this.

Cflower8 & Peppermint Peggy, thank you so much for your insight & kind words. I am trying to make myself feel better and somehow push thru this. I am hopeful that this hormone thing is fixed soon. Hugs & blessings.
