PCA or epidural???

OK, so I went to my pre-op appt yesterday and asked all the questions I wanted to ask but when I spoke to him about pain managment after the surgery he said that I could either have an epidural that would be place before the surgery or the PCA pump. I have had a lot of issues with epidurals with both my kids and i'm afraid that will happen again. I also don't want to be "pain free" for 1 or 2 days then they take it out and all of a sudden i'm in pain. I would rather just know from the beginning how bad it;s going to be. Anyone have the epidural or just PCA and have any comments??

Re: PCA or epidural???

Actually, I had neither of those options. I had toradol injection in my IV right when I came out of surgery, and then later in the evening (around 11pm or so I believe, got out of surgery at 1:30pm) I took a 600 mg motrin. They offered stronger stuff but I didn't want to have nausea.

However, I had a different surgery than yours, LSH/BSO, so there is no way to compare I guess.

There are some women on here who did have the epidural and some had the pump so hopefully they will respond soon.

Re: PCA or epidural???

Thanks for the response. I have had 3 laporoscopic surgeries and one abdominal surgery before and I do agree that it will be different in the aspect that pain management afterwards will be different because of the severity of the surgeries. I know that the last time I had an abdominal surgery when I had an ectopic pregnancy and they had to cut me open to repair it after if burst, I only had the PCA and I guess it worked fine because I don't remember anything afterwards until I went home. Thanks again!!

Re: PCA or epidural???

I had a spinal during my surgery (as well as being knocked out) and was given 1 epimorph pill. 24 hours later I was on extra strength tylenol. I stopped taking those 2 days later.

Good luck!
