Bladder and Cervix Pre-Op ?'s

Hi I am new here so I am sorry if I am doing this wrong. I am scheduled for my pre-hyster ultrasound on 9/15/11 to check for fibroids, etc...before my doctor gives the final 'okay'. I am almost 31 years old, have had an ectopic pregnancy and when I had surgery to deal with that I had endometriosis stage I and dense adhesions from my large bowel to my left pelvic and abdominal side walls. Now five years later and one twin pregnancy I have been advised that there is no way for me to safely be a pregnant person again, so I'm done. My doctor has said despite my age I am an excellent candidate for a vag hyster due to multiple reasons. He said he can take or leave the cervix but because I am young advises leaving it for pelvic floor support. I prefer he take it only because it's one less thing to deal with later, i.e., removal, abnormal paps, cancer, etc...lately however I am having issues urinating, it is difficult. I feel like work to get my bladder completely drained, different though from a UTI. If any of you veterans can please shed light on either of these subjects (cervix and bladder issues) I would be so greatly appreciative. I am looking forward to no more periods and all of the negatives that my monthly cycle brings, but apprehensive and scared of course to undergo an elective surgery. Thanks!

Re: Bladder and Cervix Pre-Op ?'s

When you go in for your ultrasound it would be good to mention your bladder issues to the tech. Your bladder would be included in a pelvic ultrasound anyway, but the tech might give it more attention if s/he is alerted to the problem.

What to do about your cervix really should be your choice; it's your body. However, leaving the cervix does result in less blood lost and an easier recovery. The reason mine is gone is because my uterus had grown things (benign, thankfully) 3 times within the past 10 years, and the cervix is the neck of the uterus, not a separate organ. I didn't want to grow anything else that would put me back into major surgery.

Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery.
