Pre-op test

My Dr has ordered several pre-op tests such as an EKG, CBC, CMP??, Type & Screening, CXR??, and urinalysis with reflex to culture. Is this normal? Seems like a lot of testing to me.

Re: Pre-op test

Hi there! Yes, those are all normal. I've had the same ones ordered. The EKG is to make sure you don't have any underlying cardiac conditions, which would be good to know before you go under anesthesia. The CBC and CMP (complete blood count and comprehensive metabolic panel) are blood tests that look at your overall health and how your systems are functioning. Type and screening is for your blood type, on the slim chance a transfusion is needed during your operation. CXR is chest x-ray, again to make sure you don't have any underlying conditions that would make anesthesia more difficult. Urinalysis/culture is to make sure you don't have any infections and also gives another look at your overall health and your fluid and eletrolyte balances.

Most of the pre-op testing also serves as a baseline -- they will probably do tests again afterward to make sure that your body systems are all working correctly. It *is* a lot of testing, but it's for a good cause! :-)

Best of luck to you!!

Re: Pre-op test

I've read such a wide variety of tests ordered for pre op. I was expecting to get a whole bunch of stuff and then I ended up with the blood draw and I get a pregnancy test on the day of. Some get a lot and some get a little. It seems more to do with the doctor and less to do with the patient (unless you have another underlying condition).... just my observation
