First Post! Hyst next Wed..emotional & needing advice

Hello ladies, as stated, I am slated to have my hysterectomy this coming Wednesday, Sept. 14, and I have been given two options as to the procedure.

I am 41 and I am leaving my ovaries, by the way.

I can do this vaginally, which will leave me without any abdominal scars, but will remove my cervix. Or, I can have it laparoscopically, leaving my cervix in tact, but leaving me with the incision scars.

I spoke at length with the physician, and she ended up advising me to do it vaginally, to avoid the scarring. However, she did tell me two major drawbacks to this.

She told me that with my cervix removed, I will lose the lubrication that it secretes during sex, thus, sex will be "drier". Secondly, I have a potential of vaginal wall collapse/prolapse in about ten years.

Knowing this, she still advised me to have it done vaginally, but is leaving it up to me.

In a word: HELP!!! I in no way want an inferior sex life, having to rely on artificial lubrication, and I do also wonder about others' testimonies of loss of pelvic support over time.

I am aware that there are many many posts here that cover this topic, but I need some immediate helpful advise. Please, can someone counsel me and also point me to the best place for support for this decision on this topic?

I really can't make this decision alone, and am soliciting all the support in making this crucial decision I can get. Also, I could not find a way to post this anywhere else but here, ie a topic-specific forum. Help here would also be so appreciated!

Blessings and thanks to all who can help me in this emotional time for me,

Re: First Post! Hyst next Wed..emotional & needing advice

I am not an expert by any means. I haven't had my hysterectomy yet and mine is a complete one so I have no choice in the operation. But I had my Gallbladder removed laparoscopy (can't spell sorry) and I have 4 teeny weanie little scars. The surgery was so easy to recover from, the next day my dog ran away while my husband was at the store and i was able to walk through the woods to find her and get her. I don't have a bikini body but if I did i still wouldn't care about the tiny incisions, they are so small seriously! My largest one is about half inch! If this were my choice, I would keep my cervix and have a few scars. Good Luck, I am sure you will choose what is best for you.

I am not keeping my cervix because some people still have periods when they have their cervix, and if I'm going though all this, I don't want to still have periods. Good luck on your choice and your surgery!

Re: First Post! Hyst next Wed..emotional & needing advice

I'm having a TAH next Friday and I am having the cervex removed. There are vaginal lubricants that you can purchase that will help with the dryness. I know it is a hard decision to make and I recomend that you search this site. There have been many topics about this subject with tons of information.

It's a very personal decision, but there are some things you should keep in mind. Have you ever had an irregular pap? Are you more concerned about the small scars to having a vaginal cuff? Having the cervex removed seems to extend the healing time, but remember, your body heals at it's own rate so it may not make a difference.

Many women who have posted in the past have said they didn't notice any difference with sex, so that is something I hold onto myself. Some discomfort is always expected after surgery though I don't expect it to be perfect once released that first time.

Good luck on making your decision & I'll see you on the post-op board for our week.

Re: First Post! Hyst next Wed..emotional & needing advice

I too had my cervix removed as I wanted none of the "mini" periods some of the women spoke about who left theirs. That being said, the horrific bleeding episodes was a main cause for my surgery. I too have read several women on here who say they had no negative effect on sex life.

I personally asked my surgeon about the prolapse issue and my DR said that was something that happened more in the old way of performing hysterectomy. He said it is still possible but that it isn't as big of an issue with new surgical methods. Hope this information helps a little. Good luck with your decision.

Re: First Post! Hyst next Wed..emotional & needing advice

I'm in a very similar spot to you, and have struggled with the cervix versus no cervix question. I could tell you that I have only weighed the risk of prolapse versus risk of mini periods - but I'll be frank - I really like my cervix during sex (lubrication/sensation/the whole 9 yards) and I don't want to give that up!

I have shared that with my dr & he understands. I also understand that he may get in there and see that my cervix is misbehaving just as badly as my left ovary & uterus. I am trying to prepare myself from that eventuality as well.

Nonetheless I keep "weighing" my options, and I keep going back & forth on my decisions, possibly because my surgery is scheduled for this week I keep revisiting every decision I think that I have made. And I think the most important thing I have learned from this website is that we all do the best we can with what we have. We all have to balance those factors that are most important to us, inform ourselves, consult our doctors and then trust in ourselves.

So bottom line is: I can't give you any advice, because I haven't been there, but I can give you emotional support.

You'll find the right decision for you - and know that there are loads of us here to support you!

Good luck!

Re: First Post! Hyst next Wed..emotional & needing advice

Hi there! I don't have much to add in the way of advice. From personal experience, I have had previous laparoscopic surgeries and as another poster already mentioned, the scars are minimal. In fact, I can't even find the scar from my first lap (about ten years ago) anymore, and can only find the scars from the 2nd lap because it was earlier this year. I'm keeping my cervix and ovaries at this time.

This is obviously a very personal decision and I applaud you for doing your research!! I wish you all the best of luck in your decision-making and with your surgery. Mine is on the same day (this Wednesday, the 14th) so I'll probably see you on the "other side" as well!

Re: First Post! Hyst next Wed..emotional & needing advice

I had a minimally invasive LAVH. I have three tiny inside my belly button and two really low in the bikini area. I can hardly see them. I kept both ovaries.

I had my cervix removed. I wanted no part of possible mini periods. My surgeon told me that the supporting ligaments on either side of my vagina would be left in tact and undamaged and I would not need the cervix to support the vagina.

As for sex....I have done that and noticed no difference in lubrication. I had no problems with this before and have no issues after.

Good luck making your decision!

Re: First Post! Hyst next Wed..emotional & needing advice

Hey, I just want to say a big thank you to you ladies who took the time to answer me and tell me a little of your own reasoning as well. Each and every post is so appreciated.

Wow TangoRomeo, we are going in on the same day! I'll be thinking of you. And Mel, you are just two days after. This is an unusual type of camaraderie, isn't it?

Well, I made my decision after lots of late night post reading and independent research...I am having it laparoscopically and KEEPING MY CERVIX! I have had no abnormal paps and honestly, would love to have a thriving sex life again one day if God blesses me with marriage again. I have put lots of time and prayer into this and I have peace about this decision.

I totally understand as well the reasoning for some to remove it, and I am really happy to hear those of you speak of great sex post-removal. Our bodies are wonderful, accommodating things, aren't they?

Thank you all again. It is so comforting to know this community is here. I will be back visiting on the post-op side in a few days!
