Question about second opinions

Hi Ladies,
I was wondering if any of you sought second opinions before going through with the surgery, or did you just go with your doctors suggestions. Thank you.

Re: Question about second opinions

Hi Hershey,
I did get a second opinion because cancer was suspected so after initial diagnosis, I went for a second opinion. Thankfully, after all the tests were looked at both agree they didn't think there was cancer but everything had to go. Made my decision much easier - RoeD

Re: Question about second opinions

Hi Hershey,

Second opinions are always recommened. This is a huge surgery & it takes a lot out of you. However, if you feel comfortable with your decision & know it's the right thing to do, then take your doctor's recommendation.

My doctor gave me a choice & after years of having issues this was the choice I made. It isn't the first time a hysterectomy has been on the table for me, the first time it was in front of me was 13 years ago, but I was young and wanted to try and have children. So I guess, in a way, this was my second opinion. LOL However, saying that, I honestly didn't go get a second opinion this time around. I knew this was the right thing to do & I trust my doctor.

A lot of people do seek second opinions & sometimes third opinions though. If you don't feel comfortable with what has been told to you, I suggest doing just that. I do recommened having a copy of your file from your other doctor though, so the new doctor doesn't have to do all the same tests over again.

Re: Question about second opinions

I had a 2nd opinion and was told that I needed a hysterectomy but really liked 2nd doc. He also told me that he would attempt a vaginal surgery where 1st doc said no way. I went ahead and scheduled surgery with 2nd doc. Liked his bedside manner and way he presented everything. He's going to try to leave ovavies. 1st doc wanted them out. Definitely, get 2nd opinion and make sure you are comfortable with who you choose. Best of luck to you!

Re: Question about second opinions

Hi all, I did not have a second opinion. I thought about it, but i knew i needed this surgery, and i like my Dr a lot. If you have concerns with the way your doc treats you, or if you feel rushed then I agree with the other ladies in saying, get a second opinion. I was nervous about having both ovaries removed...i thought i'd wake up and be 80 years old...or have no emotions because i have no hormones..lol. My doc was very confident and said he KNOWS that i will feel better after this surgery. I trusted him. Good luck to you, you will feel better after the surgery...all the worrying that comes before surgery will be gone...and that is the hardest part i think. -Rachel

Re: Question about second opinions

I would have got another opinion but my case may be different. I had a uterine prolapse which is basically my uterus was falling out of my vagina causing pain as well as other health problems. There was only 2 ways to fix it, one is none surgical which I tried but could not do and the other was hysterectomy, the doctor said putting a sling under to hold it would only result in an operation sooner or later especially if my job was physical it would only be a matter of time for it to fall again so I went with a hysterectomy. If why you are doing the surgery is not interfering with you life or health then yes you should get a second opinion

Re: Question about second opinions

I did not get a second opinion after surgery was discussed. However, this is the 3rd doctor I've seen for my gyn issues and the first one who didn't more or less write me off, so I saw no reason to seek another opinion. I trust him with my life, I found him very highly recommended and researched him and talked with some of his patients before seeing him. I think you really just have to go with your gut. (no pun intended!!!!)

Re: Question about second opinions

HersheyKiss -

I personally did get a 2nd opinion primarily because my original gyn told me that cancer surgery couldn't be done laproscopically. Through my own research I found my gyn-onc (he didn't tell me those existed either) and he did the surgery laproscopically.

HysterSisters has a video about requesting a 2nd opinion and there are at least 2 other videos in the Patient Education category of our video section from Doctors who also advise 2nd opinions.

As mentioned this is a big surgery and what is removed can't be put back. Also Drs will recommend what they are comfortable with and may not be up on the latest techniques. When we asked my Dr. how many hysterectomies he had performed for cancer he said they were just like c-sections and he had done hundreds of those. At least he was going to have an oncologist present but told me I couldn't meet with them before the surgery.

I vote 2nd opinion.

Re: Question about second opinions

Hello not only did I not get a second opinion I actually was the one to request a hysterectomy. I have an extensive OBGYN history that goes back 23 years (HPV) - I have had procedures with freezing, heating, LEEP, removing pieces of my cervix, biopsies, ultrasounds and I have had ENOUGH.

I am severly anemic and to top it off this year the irregular bleeding and clotting began. I use the birth control patch (even though I had my tubes tied 5 years ago) to help with the bleeding and clotting and it worked for 2 years until now. Now I bleed WITH the patch. I NEVER know when my period is coming or going (bled for 3 weeks in May) so yes I sure did tell my doctor when she recommeded the endometrial ablation (I researched it and found the results and percentages of success to be unflattering) I told her NO I would not go through a procedure that wasn't guaranteed and I wanted a hysterectomy....she simply looked at me and said when would you like to do it?

Im going on a cruise to Bermuda October 14-21 and having the suregey October 27- I am THRILLED to say the least. My doctor was the second opinion....I was the first (smile)
