Anyone else pregnant? Anyone have a hysterctomy for placenta accreta?

My doctor told me that we have to deliver my baby early and perform a hysterectomy at the same time due to a condition called placenta accreta (where the placenta adheres to the uterus and can't detach). Anyone experience this? The news is an absolute shock to me and I am in disbelief that I will be having a hysterectomy in a couple weeks. Experiencing a huge sense of loss. I would like to know if anyone had a hysterectomy (after delivery) that used a c-section scar rather than a vertical incision. My docs are saying it has to be vertical. Also, what the recovery was like (having a baby is tough enough on the body). Thanks.

Re: Anyone else pregnant? (and needing a hyst)

Hi,
I am not pregnant, I just wanted to write and say i am sorry you are going through this. I can't even imagine being pregnant and finding out that I have to have a hyst at the same time as giving birth. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that someone who has been through this will find your post. Good Luck to you.

Re: Anyone else pregnant?

I wish you the best and also feel for your shock and loss. But be sure to ask your doctor about all the surgical options for hysterectomy, such as whether you want to keep your ovaries, or cervix.

Re: Anyone else pregnant?

I had a hysterectomy the day after my c-section due to postpartum complications, and they used a horizontal incision - the same incision that was used for my c-section. In my case, they had to leave my cervix because it was dilated (the doctors said it would have been difficult for them to determine how low to go because of a dilation, so they left my cervix). I lost my ovaries as well, but it was not a choice in my case. A hysterectomy along with birth is a very hard thing to go through. Know that you are not alone, and if you need anything, let me know. Hugs to you!

Re: Anyone else pregnant?

Oh also, the recovery was very different from my previous c-section. I think a big part of that was losing my ovaries. That made things very hard - new babies (I had twins), loss of uterus, and menopause at a young age (26) - all at once. Just take your time and do what you need to do to heal. Make sure you have someone who can stay with you and help do things you shouldn't (cooking, housework, etc) for 6-8 weeks. Take care of yourself first and your baby next, and always ask for help when you need it.

Re: Anyone else pregnant?

I am not pregnant either, but wanted to tell you how sorry I am. I can't imagine having to have a hysterectomy right after having a baby. But just concentrate on the beautiful life you're getting and not what you're losing. Congratulations on your baby!

Re: Anyone else pregnant? Anyone have a hysterctomy for placenta accreta?

Thank you for your support ladies! I checked with my doc and I will keep my cervix and ovaries, so that's good. Will keep you posted.
