Finding a dr. that believes in natural hormones?

How do I find a dr. in my area that believes in using natural hormones, like natural progesterone? I've been looking on the internet and haven't had too many results. I'm in the Pennsylvania/Maryland area. Most dr's in my area are not very "enlightened" when it comes to this type of thing...a friend of mine who had a hysterectomy a year ago and who is going through menopause can't even find a dr. who will test her progesterone level! (I recommended John Lee, MD's book to her). I haven't broached the subject yet with my own gyno...I go for my 6 week appt. this week and I'll ask her what her theory is on menopause treatment. I'm fully predicting I'll hear the "you don't have a uterus so you don't need progesterone" comment...but...I could be wrong.

Re: Finding a dr. that believes in natural hormones?

I think the term you're looking for is "bioidentical", not natural. Bioidentical hormones are the same as our ovaries make/made, whatever the source (most are synthesized from soy or wild yam sources).

Try going to www.iacprx.org and using their pharmacy locator to find a compounding pharmacy near you, and then call them and ask which DRs in your area prescribe hormone replacement through them. Then you can go through those names and see which one(s) take your insurance, if that's a factor.

By the way, there is something to the "no uterus, no progesterone" thing... the primary function of progesterone is to prevent endometrial proliferation, and unless you had endometriosis or certain 'female cancers' which are hormone-dependent, you may not need it anymore.

IMHO, testing progesterone levels isn't too meaningful, since menopausal symptoms are more related to estrogen and testosterone levels than progesterone levels. Plus, tests for progesterone levels can sometimes give misleading results, especially if you've been using progesterone cream already. Much better to go by symptoms.

You might want to keep a symptom diary, which can be very helpful when you meet with your doctor at your next appointment.

My chiropractor has and does natural healing and natural hormone therapy too. Try one where you are. Maybe will work out.

Thanks for all the good ideas. My dr. did say that I had endometriosis. I didn't even know I had it until my surgery.
