Re: Counting down & nervous

Thank you to goldenlife for sharing your prep and other info. I just found out this week that I needed TAH/probable BSO. Wants to schedule me in 2-3 weeks and it's hard to know where to start with planning, what I'll need to do, etc. Scheduled next week for second opinion. Also first Dr said DaVinci was not an option, how did they let you know about the change in your surgery?

God bless to all of you waiting for surgery. I'm going to pray for all of you after I finish this post!

Re: Counting down & nervous

Hi Fiona08,

I really think it was just a series of events. When my GYN told me I needed the surgery, I immediately started researching my diagnosis (Complex hyperplasia with atypia) and most everything I read said that the surgery would have to be performed via abdomen due to the pre-cancer condition, staging during surgery and not wanting to spread any cancer cells around.

One month went by and I had my first appt. with the oncologist. A physical exam told him that my uterus was small and he felt that he could actually do the surgery laparoscopically.

I did worry about the staging and how would he actually get the uterus out and not spread cancer cells around. I have several scars from previous surgeries ( 2-c-sections and appendix). He did warn me that there was a possibility he might need to change in the middle of the surgery to abdomen surgery.

When they finally called to book the surgery on Sept 1, I was offered the robot assisted surgery. They remove the uterus through the vagina and contain any cancer cells and the same rules still apply - if they run into problems, it could change to an abdomen surgery.

I just think that the doctor feels like I am a good candidate, he has extensive experience and that particular OR with the robot was available. It could all change once he gets inside.

I feel really blessed with the way everything is coming together. From much of what I have read here on the forum, the type of hysterectomy really depends on the experience of the surgeon and the diagnosis/health condition of the patient.

For me, I would rather endure the abdominal surgery and recovery if there was any risk of spreading cancer cells. My doctor must feel that the risk is very low and the uterus can be safely removed via vagina.

Each situation is different, but it can also be good to get the second opinion and find doctors with extensive experience.

Keep busy, work on your health, research to get all your questions answered and when your date finally arrives, you will be ready!

Best of luck to you,
goldenlife

Re: Counting down & nervous

Hello fellow sisters
I'm having my TAH on the 27th Sept and will have been waiting for 1.5 months... I'm finding it hard now it's only 12 days away... I know it's prob the best decision and bets outcome for me but I'm very anxious to be on the other side..

I had an ablation 4 years ago which really put off the hysterectomy for that time so I am great full for that. But I have 2 fibroids 1 being 6.2cm and the other 1 is appox 4cm not sure if these are big or not but my uterus is enlarged as well...

Any way here I am thanks for listening...and good luck to you all xoxo

Re: Counting down & nervous

Thanks for all the info, Goldenlife. Appreciate you sharing your story, the more info we all get the better. I will be praying that your DaVinci goes well, that's great that we have such great technology so that our recovery time can hopefully go down. And that's good news that your dr thinks youre a good candidate for that.

I found out that there's not a close hospital that has the robot, also would have to work on the insurance company to pay for that. After a day with research, I'm ok with the TAH. I've had other gyn issues, so that's prob best for me. Got scheduled today for oct 18 so I have a little more time to decide whether to keep the other ovary or not. May not be an option when he goes in and looks at it. And family history of ovarian cancer and previous scar tissue around it from endometriosis. But there's advantages to keeping one if it works. Hard decision.

I started a copious notebook today with questions and references, etc. And started walking 2 miles today to try to get ready for surgery. Gonna hate the waiting!

Re: Counting down & nervous

Hi, marzipan01! I'm new here, too. Yeah, I can tell the waiting will be hard. It seems that most people are so glad to be on the other side. I will be praying for your surgery, too. I hope it takes care of all your issues with the fibroids. I think it's normal to second guess as we approach something big like this, but you made an informed decision with your doctor and have to remember that. I saw that there are a lot of places on this site about pre-op jitters. Thank you God for this site and all of you. Hope you have a good nights sleep tonight!
