Wondering whether to remove my ovaries or not.

I am researching my options for a hysterectomy. Because of biopsy results my doctor is recommending the removal of my cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes. But the removal of the ovaries is optional. There are benefits to leaving the ovaries, as I understand it, but since my mother has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer I am wondrering if the risks are worth the benefits? Does anyone out there know much about this? Or maybe you've been through the same experience. I just don't know what to do. It really is consuming me up. I've started some menopause symptoms.

I would be scared to keep them with that history, but that's me. Good luck on your choice.

Yes, I'm very scared. However my 41 year old sister has lynch snydrome which is a inherited genetic condition that puts her at a increased risk of cancer. She is very sick all the time. She is being treated at Mayo clinic. Her genticists have informed her that if the ovaries are o.k. don't remove them. If I don't have them removed I will definately be followed very closely by my doctor with monitoring my ovaries closely.

Well in that case, you should be okay. My sister died from ovarian cancer in 2008. Since I went int to early menopause, my gyno has been behind me to get rid of mine for peace of mind.

Re: Wondering whether to remove my ovaries or not.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm kinda leaning toward keeping them but monitoring them very closely. I want to make a second appt. with my gyno since I just met her. We just moved to the area.I have a lot of questions for her. I called her on tues. and am still waiting for a response to schedule an appt. I hope they call me back today with a sooner than later appt. I don't want to wait too long.
