Concerns about a roommate

Hi Ladies,
I am so nervous about all of this. Plus, I don't do well in a shared room. I can't sleep in the room with a stranger. Anyone have suggestions?

Re: Concerns about a roommate

If you have an iPod, you could fill it with music or podcasts you like. Or, you could buy ear plugs. Either way you won't hear a roommate. I've heard many ladies say a sleep mask is very helpful in the hospital.

Re: Concerns about a roommate

Do you know for sure you will have one?
I expected one at least, maybe two! And like you I dreaded it!

But found to my delight I had not only a single room but my own toilet and shower (ensuite!)

Even though this was in a public-healthcare hospital (in New Zealand) where you don't expect to get that sort of luxury!

Hoping you too will be alone if at all possible!

Re: Concerns about a roommate

I borrowed a friends mini-dvd player and only took the earplugs out of my ears to talk to nurses and the doctor.

Re: Concerns about a roommate

I had a roommate and there was a curtain between the two beds so it was very private.

The pain meds might help with sleep, if not ask for a sleeping pill if you are concerned.

I am not a fan of roommates, but it was OK to have someone there,

Re: Concerns about a roommate

I agree with others... earplugs and a mask helps a lot. I have been in the hospital 3 times and each with a roommate. Most left me alone but had one loud TV and talker... hated it... That is when I started bringing earplugs...Life savors for sure!
Just try to stay awake as much during the day and sleep at night. It helps..
Hope you get lucky with no roomy..

Re: Concerns about a roommate

They've said it all: earplugs and an ipod or music device! It will help, not only with a roommate, but also with the noises of the hospital. A sleep mask helps if you are sensitive to light and preserves some privacy.
My last post op, the nurses would come in, see the headphones and inexplicably would start whispering. Really?
Also, do have some magazines or books or whatever your choice for bedridden entertainment. Most roomies prefer to keep to themselves. The hardest part is the IV alarm; that no one can sleep through!

I didn't expect to have a roommate but did, and having my iPod came in handy when she had guest, but I was so drugged it didn't matter. The second day she went home and I was alone.

Take care.

Re: Concerns about a roommate

I never even thought about the possibility of a roommate. I hope I don't but I guess it is possible. Thanks for bringing that to my attention so I am not shocked on Monday.

Re: Concerns about a roommate

I didn't have a roommate.
If I did, I guess we would have something in common.
