Bowel Prep - What to expect??

Hello my fellow sisters. I am doing the gosh awful bowel prep tomorrow.

I have never had to do this before and just wondering what other people have experienced. I haven't heard ANYTHING good about it but some advice would be great. One person told me about butt paste (baby diaper rash cream) so got some of that. She also said that she still needed to go even on route to hospital!! Is this true? Will I get ANY sleep tomorrow night?

Anything you can supply would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Re: Bowel Prep - What to expect??

The only bowel prep I was asked to do is an enema, which I've never done before. I told my doctor this and asked what if I don't do it right. She said it was ok. I'm hoping I don't make a mess on the table, lol

Re: Bowel Prep - What to expect??

I had to use one small bottle of Mag. Citrate added to a small amount of water. I didn't need any kind of oitment and I didn't have a bowel movement the next morning. I was told to start the bowel prep around 4 p.m. I also had to use an enema late the same night. I had no problems.

Re: Bowel Prep - What to expect??

It depends on the bowel prep you are taking. Which one did the give you?

No matter what here is my advice. Follow directions. Drink a ton of water.
Butt past for sure! Near the end of mine, I felt like I was pooping glass, even thought it was water.

Depending on the kind depends on the taste. Just try to choke it down. I am sorry it does taste heinous, but try to drink it down fast, and the water follow up helps.

good luck

Re: Bowel Prep - What to expect??

I agree, it depends on the type ordered for you. I had to do one enema the night before at home (had never done one before either, but it was easily do-able) and one in the hospital the morning of. If you have to do mag citrate or GoLytely, I would definitely recommend butt paste and drinking as much water as possible. That stuff can be corrosive coming back out!

Best of luck to you!

Re: Bowel Prep - What to expect??

I am doing the bowel prep today. Don't plan on getting far from home. I am living in the bathroom. I can honestly say this is the worst diarreah I have ever had. Butt paste may work because mine is raw from going and wiping. I took my first dose at 7 a.m. and the second at 11 a.m. I am thinking there cannot be much left in me at this point...can there?

Good luck...I drank one gulp of the mag. cit. and then one gulp of water and I did that until each dose was gone. It helped to wash away the taste quickly.

This too shall pass...literally...right? LOL

Re: Bowel Prep - What to expect??

It definitely isn't pleasant, but, you'll get through it. I had to do the bottle of Mag Citrate at 6 pm, 2 days prior to surgery. I mixed it with a bottle of Gatorade and it still tasted awful, but, I got it down. It didn't "do" anything until about 4 hours later. I slept most of the night, only got up a couple times to "go". The day prior to surgery had to do a liquid diet and then that evening, had to do a whole bottle of Miralax. That was awful. But, again, I was able to get some sleep. I was pretty cleaned out by bed time, but did have to "go" a few times before I left for the hospital and even once I got there.
I used Desitin and it definitely helped, as well as wet wipes...no TP, you'll be too sore.

Re: Bowel Prep - What to expect??

I had read somewhere to put the mag citrate in the fridge awhile before drinking. I had the lemon flavor and drinking it really cold seemed to help. It took a little while to kick in, but once it did, I couldn't leave the bathroom area for very long. I highly agree with some sort of soothing paste and nice gentle wipes. I was so sore after a few hours. Good luck!

Re: Bowel Prep - What to expect??

The pharmacy lady recommended Sprite mixed with the mag sulfate. Interestingly, my doc doesn't requite it, but I asked for it. Still dreading it but dread the pain without it more!
