Post bariatric surgery & bowel prep

I had a RNY gastric bypass about 3 years ago, and I'm wondering if anyone can help me with bowel prep before my upcoming LAVH on 10/4.
Most of the recommended items on my doc's list are packed full of sugar and won't work for me.

My bariatric surgeon passed away two years ago, so I can't go there for this question. :-(

Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

Re: Post bariatric surgery & bowel prep

I used Phillips milk of magnesia. Is that one on your list?

Re: Post bariatric surgery & bowel prep

Do Miralax and mag citrate contain sugar? Those seem to be the main ones. Golytely? Not the full amount of course. I didn't think they had sugar so it's worth a look but I haven't checked them to see. Some Drs just require dulcolax and a couple enemas, maybe your Dr would consider that? It would avoid the sugar issue. Good luck with your prep and surgery.

Re: Post bariatric surgery & bowel prep

I don't remember which laxative it was, but that's not what I am worried about.

It is the list of allowed foods/liquids that concerns me. Fruit juice, jello, 7 UP, all that stuff is full of sugar, and yea, some of it does come sugar free, but I need to have some calories during the day, kwim? I can have beef & chicken broth, but I'm wondering if protein shakes made with water would work I'm almost positive it would be digested way before surgery.

I was wondering if there was anyone else here who might have had bariatric surgery too who might have ideas.

Re: Post bariatric surgery & bowel prep

I am so not doing enemas!!! Which is good, because he doesn't require it.;-)

It's not the laxative I'm worried about, but the recommended foods and liquids.

Re: Post bariatric surgery & bowel prep

I ate light the day before surgery. I ate chicken and veggies, a small amount of fruit and drink atleast 8 glasses of water. I was fine. I would imagine the protein shakes made with water would be fine. My husband drinks protein shakes daily and is regular if you know what I mean... I just realized that you had a bariatric bypass...

Re: Post bariatric surgery & bowel prep

I get it! I'd ask about the protein drink, it seems reasonable to me but some Drs are more sticklers than others. I never would have thought of protein powder. Let us know what you find out.

Re: Post bariatric surgery & bowel prep

I might get up really early and have some eggs or something else soft that is packed with protein. If I don't have any calories, I will develop a raging headache, and that's no fun.

Most physicians are not really well informed on gastric bypass patients, so we have to do the research ourselves. I want to follow my surgeon's directions, but I know if I do, I will end up being really really sick. I doubt if he wants me to be in the middle of a severe dumping episode.

So, I'm trying to tailor his directions to my specific needs, while still following his intent.

I think I'll be okay, but I just have to "talk" it out, kwim?
