Re: What All Do They Do At Pre-Op?

I'd suggest asking him if he'll take pics . . . I just assumed mine would, because he did for my last surgery (an exploratory lap and cauterization of endo), so when I was on the cart literally minutes away from going in the OR I happened to ask him if he was going to take pics. He said he hadn't planned on it, but he would if I wanted him to. I get to see them at my follow-up appt, which was supposed to be last Monday but has been rescheduled for next Monday.

Best wishes!

Re: What All Do They Do At Pre-Op?

My pre-op was much like Nellan's, I went to the hospital and met with a surgery room nurse. We went through tons of paperwork, medical history, height, weight, and blood pressure. She went through pre op prep (fasting instructions), what to expect for the entire day of surgery: IV placement, how anesthesia is administered, recovery room, all the tubes I will wake up with, pain management. We talked about the duration of hospital stay, all the meds and plans while I am hospitalized, and post op instructions.

Some things that were a little different for me, the nurse gave me a pair of compression stockings and a special machine for post op that encourages deep breathing. We went on a tour of the recovery area and the post op ward.

I was then sent for blood work and urine, and had to go to my regular doctor for a full physical exam.

Re: What All Do They Do At Pre-Op?

I am in Canada, and pre op here consists of physical with your physician 2 weeks prior to pre op. Day of pre op, you take your forms in with you that you filled out in advance, and they ask you the same questions again. Then you do urine, blood, chest x-ray, sometimes EKG and then you see the Anestheologist (SP?) who goes over what type of anesthetic you will get and he will also ask you basically the same questions you just answered and filled out on forms. I guess they want to triple check to make sure your answers are the same all the way thru. The process usually takes 2-4 hours (usually the latter), so I take a good book with me to while away the time. ITS almost as stressful as the impending surgery day, where they ask you the same questions once again, and do more bloodwork before putting in the dreaded iv. ITS just such a drawn out process. I understand they HAVE to do it, but its just such a stressful time...Those who don't have much pre op work, you are fortunate!!!!

Some doctors also require chest x-rays and EKG's prior to surgery, depending on your age and previous medical history. Oh, I also had to sign the novel's worth of consents at my pre-op. It was no big deal.
Yep this is what all I had to do also..I have asthma so I don't know if that makes a difference. I also have to do a breathing treatment before they will put me to sleep...

Re: What All Do They Do At Pre-Op?

Today was mine! Went to Doc's for a quick physical and question and answer session. Then to the hospital for pre admitting. They took blood for a type and cross match, height, weight and then a review of all the procedures, clear liquids after midnight on night before, Laxative at 3pm on the day before, then the mrsa qtip up the nose..done

Re: What All Do They Do At Pre-Op?

Please tell me more about this MRSA 'q tip up the nose'. I havent heard of this. I will definitely bring this up with my Surgeon/Physician. THIS and C.Difficile (SP?) scares me and I will do what I can to prevent getting it. I hope they have this in Canada.....

Re: What All Do They Do At Pre-Op?

Here in Alaska when you go in for surgery, they swab your nose during your pre admitting procedure. If you test postive for the MRSA, which is a very resistant, very bad, bacteria, they won't let you have surgery until you are treated and test negative.

"Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type (strain) of staph bacteria that does not respond to some antibiotics that are commonly used to treat staph infections"

Nasty, nasty staph bacteria.

Re: What All Do They Do At Pre-Op?

Yes,MRSA is nasty. I had no idea they tested for it. WILL be discussing with my DR. I think perhaps I will ask for testing 'after' surgery , at my checkup, to ensure I don't have it. Thanks for the info.
