Bowel prep and medicine questions

ok I have a question I as well was wondering about all that. My pre op is Wed and surgery for lavh monday.
I do not wana straight liquid diet prior and gonna try not to as I have hypoglycemia and was very very hard for me to do prep for colonoscopy.
But I have constipation problems all the time. I drink plenty extra water then should every day too.

Any suggestions for meds after surgery or anything? last time for my lapo
I didn't have a bowel movemnt for three days or four after and I was on stool softeners and laxatives. And it was hard and it hurt.
What kind of foods are good to help push through and vegies that would also?

Re: Bowel prep and medicine questions

One thing I have learned about bowel preps and hypoglycemia is to make sure you are pretty much munching or drinking all day while on a liquid diet. I choose to alternate Beef Consomme, Gatorade, and Jello Jigglers.

While water is great, it can lower blood sugar and too much water while doing a prep doesn't keep your electrolytes up which creates new problems. So while on a liquid diet, be sure you are drinking plenty besides water.

At your pre op appointment, talk to your doctor about your concerns about the hypoglycemia and see what suggestions s/he has if you have to do a liquid diet.

Using stool softners and laxatives can make bowel problems worse in some cases as they can cause the bowel to get lazy and not work properly. You should share your concerns about your prior experience with your doctor so s/he can determine which meds might be best and whether or not using stool softeners and laxatives is a good idea.

Keep in mind, a change in diet of any kind can lead to constipation issues so stool issues following a surgery can be par the course!
