Enema questions..sorry so gross

My lavh is Monday. Sunday night I was told to do an enema. I have never done one. And I have kids during the day, and only real time my husband and I can make love is at night after bed time.
So I am wonder a few thing, How long does it take for an enema to work? Does it work in a one time bowl movement or will i be going for hours?
Will I still be going all night?
Any issues with using an enema.
My gyn said the only reason she having me do one is to help things for after surgery.??? Just doesn't make sense. She said from the pain meds I will be taking after surgery. Well, I dont see how takin an enama the night before will help that? Sorry I don't like the idea of sticking water up my butt. LOL>
I do currently take a low dose narcotic and have constipation problems already.

Re: Enema questions..sorry so gross

It took mine about five minutes to work, they usually don't take longer than 15 minutes to work. When I did mine for pre-op I only went twice after that -- it's nothing at all like the mag citrate, which keeps you going for quite a while longer than that!

I had no issues with it. Try to do it lying down if you can, otherwise I did mine in the bathroom over the toilet and then lied down on my side until I couldn't hold it in any longer.

The reason they have you do that is to make sure your bowels are as empty as possible before surgery. When you are under anesthetic, your bowels will stop moving completely and so when they start up again afterward, it can be a little painful if they have anything in them.

It really wasn't that bad!! I had to do one the night before, and then the morning of. My advice would be to try to hold it in as long as you possibly can. Good luck!

SO i have to put it in and then lay down and wait for it to work, as in till I cant hold it in anymore? Will I loose water out of there if I go from bathroom to bedroom to wait? Does it hurt to insert?

Re: Enema questions..sorry so gross

It didn't hurt to insert at all. Most of them come with pre-lubricated tips, but you could use KY or some other water-based lubricant if you wanted. Lying down afterward allows it to work it's way farther up into your colon, otherwise gravity keeps it at the bottom. You might lose a little bit of the solution while going from bathroom to bedroom and back -- if I did, I didn't even notice. But my bathroom is literally like two feet from the bed If that's a concern, you could wear a pad and make sure there's a towel or something on your bed to lie on. I'd never had an enema before, and with what little amount is in those bottles, I thought it was pretty easy to hold in. I could feel it bubbling a little bit as it went in and worked it's way up. My GI system was kind of unsettled that night anyway, being the night before surgery, but it really was one of the easiest things I've ever done in my life!

Re: Enema questions..sorry so gross

everyones prep is different. Most women have a liquid diet day before, I don't. I am glad, I can't stand liquid diet and laxatives.

Re: Enema questions..sorry so gross

Having TAH on 10/6. I have to drink a bottle of Mag Citrate and do the enemas and the liquid diet as well. Yuck. The paperwork says to chill the magnesium or take it over ice. Is that what most people do?
