Any TLH's out there besides me?

I see quite a few LAVH and TAVH, and others but I haven't seen very many TLH's. As far as I understand, pre op is Wed, I am having a Total Laprascopic Hysterectomy. Curious as to why they aren't very many TLH's on here.

Re: Any TLH's out there besides me?

That is what I had- but put is as TAH just because they took everything. Guess I should note it otherwise- but since I cant change the method of surgery (went in thinking I was going the davinci method- but because of scar tissue, had to do it laproscopically) I just went with the easiest way to identify... You are not alone!

Re: Any TLH's out there besides me?

Oh,I thought TAH was a total hysterectomy but thru the abdomen. Not sure what if I am keeping anything yet. Will discuss with Dr on Wed. I had a tubal 10 years ago so I am not sure whether my tubes and ovaries are going. ALthough after what I have read about ovaries still producing after menopause, I am going to ask to keep them if they are healthy.

Re: Any TLH's out there besides me?

I know I only had a total with ovaries because I kept having cysts and with precancerous cells all over my uterus (dont know how I missed having cancer) and cancer throughout my family (mom, grandmother, aunt all had cancer)- I did not want to risk it. Never had children which bothered me- but life goes on... I lost my first husband to cancer and never want to have it.

Re: Any TLH's out there besides me?

Next friday Oct 7th. Almost packed. Got my new fleece robe, a nice soft long sleeve nightgown (chilly in Alaska), new slippers. Just waiting for the Belly bandit and the pillow pet to arrive and then I am ready. Pre op is on Wed. Surgery 8am fri. Ive gone from panicked and sad, to calm and at peace. Quite the full circle of emotion.

Re: Any TLH's out there besides me?

TLH here! I had everything - uterus, cervix, right ovary, tubes - removed except for my left ovary. Four tiny incisions. They removed my uterus via my vagina - so I'm a little confused as to the difference between TVH & a TLH...

Re: Any TLH's out there besides me?

Correct me if I am wrong....please...I understand my TLH to be where they everything goes out thru the Laprascopic tube. LAVH, means its laproscopic surgery but they take it out thru the vagina.

Correct ?

Re: Any TLH's out there besides me?

Let me see if I can help with some of the terminology!

TLH -- Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy -- means the total uterus is removed via small incisions with the assistance of a laparoscope. No work is done vaginally and there is no large abdominal cut.

TAH -- Total Abdominal Hysterectomy -- means the total uterus was removed via an abdominal incision. No work is done vaginally and there is no laparoscope involved.

LAVH -- Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy -- means some of the work was done with the assistance of a laparoscope and the total uterus was removed vaginally.

TVH -- Total Vaginal Hysterectomy -- means the total uterus was removed vaginally. There is no laparoscope or abdominal incisions.

DvH/RALH -- the hysterectomy was done with the assistance of a robot and could have been a total hysterectomy or partial. The uterus is often delivered vaginally but may not be.

There are many other options as well including the LSH, SAH, SILS, LESS, and SVH (though that one is very rare).

Some key bits of information. The word "total" has nothing to do with whether or not the ovaries was removed. A total or complete hysterectomy means the total or complete uterus was remvoed. The cervix is the neck, or bottom portion, of the uterus. Thus, if the cervix is not removed, one has had a partial, subtotal or supracervical hysterectomy.

The procedure to remove the ovaries is called an oophorectomy.
