TAH: Im worried about traveling for Thanksgiving

I am scheduled for my TAH on Oct 28th. I was hoping to go and see my family for Thanksgiving but it is an 8 hour drive to Georgia and is only 26 days Post Op. Do you think I will be healed enough to sit in a car for that long?

Ask your GYN. I think the advice is to avoid long periods of travel due to the risk of developing DVT - blood clots in the legs, due to sitting for so long.
If given the go ahead by your GYN, then I suggest pressure stockings and regualr stops to walk and changing positions in the car, front to back (so you can put your feet up, and do the ankle exercises regulary. Can you fly direct instead?

I know.... the holidays are quickly coming upon us... I was to have Thanksgiving here but my sister is gonna do it instead... Only a short car ride for me but I fear that my surgery is gonna be closer to Thanksgiving than I would like.
Rest breaks will help if your Doc gives the OK to travel then... I think the socks make since. Also I take a baby asprin when I have to travel... Doc tells me too...you could ask if that would help...

I'm wondering same thing but about Christmas. My surgery is Nov. 30th. Will I be able to ride in a car after a TAH 3 weeks later? Clots would be my biggest worry, but also a seat belt and a seated position for so long. Should I just break it to my family now that we aren't coming?

Depends how long the drive is.
Based on how I felt, I wouldn't take a long trip.
I still don't like the seat belt.

I would talk to your doctor.

Personally, I'm at eight weeks now and only just getting to the point where the idea of spending hours in the car doesn't make me wince. If your doctor says it's OK, I suggest keeping a pillow on your lap to cushion you from the seatbelt, recline the seat, put your feet up as much as you can, and stop every hour or two to get out and stretch your legs.

Could your family come to you for Thanksgiving instead? Or is flying an option?
