Re: no bowel prep?

I had to stop eating by midnight and reported to Day Surgery at 10:15am the following morning. My surgery was at no bowel prep or enemas. This was a relief for me!

Re: no bowel prep?

I had a TVH and no bowel prep. Just nothing after midnight and only water or apple juice until 8am. No problems at all. Good luck!!!

Re: no bowel prep?

No bowel prep. for me.. and I had a TAH. Not sure if it makes a difference what surgery you have, but it seems to be what your doc. decides, mainly.

Still, having NOT had a bowel prep., I would recommend you have a good "clean out" or at least make sure you have a BM before you go in. If you are going to be on opiates for pain relief, that will stop your bowel working for a while, and if you had a full bowel, your first BM might get a bit hard!

I had a BM before I went in but not another till day 4 post-op. Despite having been given stool softeners, I was very constipated the first and second time I went. (And yes, I did ask for a suppository!)

I don't know if bowel prep. might have prevented my problems. There must be a reason for it... I'd be interested to know why some do it.

Re: no bowel prep?

I didn't have to do bowel prep either. Nothing to eat past midnight the night before. And I had to shower with antibacterial soap twice before surgery. I didn't have diet restrictions but I still made a point to eat light the last two days before surgery. I was worried about that first BM and rightly so, I didn't go until post op day 5.
