Surgery may need to be rescheduled...

I had my pre-op appointment today for my DiVinci Assisted Total Hysterectomy (Abdominal). My potassium was a little lower than normal, but the surgeon was not concerned. It was 3.2. Later today I had my followup appt with my GP re: my labs and headaches. She was more concerned about the low potassium and sent me to the lab for a recheck.

I got a call tonight from the on-call MD, and my potassium has dropped even more from my preop labs 9/25. Now at 2.6. I will have to send someone into the nearest pharmacy (35 mins each way) to pick up some RX Potassium in the a.m., and will have to call my surgeon. The on-call dr said she wasn't sure it would come up enough with only 24 hrs to treat. I took 4 OTC Potassium supplements immediately (usually take 2 per day as is...)

Our local market is closed already, and I don't have any V-8 juice in the house, but will have friend pick some up when at the pharmacy for me. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated. I've been crying since I got the call an hour ago, and just don't want to reschedule my surgery (MY LIFE!)

Re: Surgery may need to be rescheduled...

Good news! While they did move my surgery to later in the day, I will still go in on Friday. I've started my RX Potassium, and will have to go into town (30 mins away) for another lab draw tomorrow in the early am, they will be prepared with IV potassium if I need more, and will have time to recheck me just prior to surgery. This is great, because I was really stressing about the possible delay, and they are scheduling a month out right now!

Re: Surgery may need to be rescheduled...

Congratulations and I bet that is frustrating! I remember waiting for my surgery and playing out a million different scenerios as to what could possibly cancel my surgery and how devastated I would be. In the end, everything went smoothly and here I am 4 weeks later. Wouldn't go back and change a thing....

Take a deep breath, it will work out. Then you can spend your time worrying about other things like BM's and incisions!
