Misoprostol (Cytotec) prescribed pre-op

Has anyone taken Misoprostol pre-op?

My gyn ordered oral Misoprostol for the 7 days prior to my LAVH.

I understand the purpose of the drug - cervical ripening/softening.

I have no idea what to expect when I take it.
Would appreciate hearing anyone's experience with this drug.

Is my GYN the only one using this drug?

Re: Misoprostol (Cytotec) prescribed pre-op

I was prescribed it prior to a Mirena insertion. I think everyone's experience is different and it probably depends on dose and delivery method, but my experience was not good. I was prescribed three tablets to be inserted vaginally the evening prior to my IUD insertion. It pretty much felt like I was in labour for 12 hours. No fun. Not sure that helps you much. I guess it would have been worth it had the IUD worked but the experience was pretty awful.

Thanks for the reply, Lokilator.

I have a pre-op "talk" appt tomorrow. I'm planning to ask about the drug. Hopefully the GYN will have some answers.

Re: Misoprostol (Cytotec) prescribed pre-op

I was prescribed Misoprostol before a cervical biopsy. The gyne was having no success getting a biopsy due to cervical scarring after a LEEP procedure. I had the same experience as Lokilator. 3 tablets to be inserted vaginally over 3 nights. It was a nightmare. Within 20 minutes of putting it in I was in contracting like I was in labour. I did not sleep at all that night. I spent 11 hours crying, doing labor breathing, and cursing my doctor. I did NOT use the next two doses. Hopefully it's not so bad when taken orally?

Re: Misoprostol (Cytotec) prescribed pre-op

Dang! I took all three at the same time! Sounds like an identical reaction though. Maybe taking it orally is different. Definitely get more info from your doctor. I was pretty choked at my doctor for not warning me it would put me in full-on labour!

Re: Misoprostol (Cytotec) prescribed pre-op

All 3 tablets at once?! I feel ill at the thought... I was concerned when I picked it up at he pharmacy and two pharmacists came over to discuss it with me. One of them asked if I was having an abortion! They made it clear it was a serious drug.

Yarnstasher, I'm sorry if this scares you. Please discuss with your doctor. You're the first one I've seen on this site that has been prescribed this before hysterectomy.

Re: Misoprostol (Cytotec) prescribed pre-op

Thanks for your reply, sugarandspice.

I was able to talk to the GYN about the Cytotec today. She said most of her patients tolerate it pretty well. The oral dose can cause cramping, but it's not too bad.

I'm having a LAVH/BSO. The purpose of the Cytotec is to soften the cervix & make it easier to insert the uterine manipulator.

2 doses down.
It's going ok so far. No cramping.
