Re: Surgery schedule for 10/18/11 and I am getting really nervous

You aren't being a baby.

This is MAJOR surgery no matter what others might think. I had people/co-workers just brush it off like I was having a freaking tonsillectomy or gallbladder surgery.

I don't know what type of surgery you are having so I'm not sure what to tell you to expect when it comes to recovery because everybody is different.

My preop consisted of bloodwork...preg test, typed my bood, chest x-rays, EKG. Getting my insurance info. Getting my preop scrub soap with instructions. I didn't see my doc for preop, just the hospital peeps. If your doc wants a bowel prep, she/he should tell you what/when to do it.

I will tell you, you will have pain for a while. You'll have a couple hundred of internal stitches that will take 6-10 weeks to dissolve/heal so don't bend, lift, strain, sex, or bathe until your doctor tells you its ok. REST REST REST !!!

Let me tell ya, the surgery was NOTHING. Its the recovery that's the hardest. You go to sleep and feel/know nothing. Wake up with your uterus gone.

You will be fine. My nerves got to me so badly, I was taking valium for a week before my surgery. Now, I'm thinking, wow, it wasn't near as bad as I imagined it would be.

Like I said, recovering is the hardest. You won't feel like doing much the first week or two. You'll be tired, sore and bloated. Your mind will finally want to do more but your body won't allow it. That will get frustrating but you have to heal...........inside & out. So, rest and do what the doc tells you. After a good 6 weeks, you should be feeling better.

Re: Surgery schedule for 10/18/11 and I am getting really nervous

Thank you Keltec, I appeciate your response...I'm having a LAVH (laproscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy. I am totally freaked out because of possible complications, recovery, is some history of my situation... I am 32 years old and I was having heavy bleeding and very large clots, the pain was unbearable. I went to see my OBGYN and he did his exam and said my uterus felt abnormally large, then he wanted to do an ultrasound to take measurements, he then said he needed to do a biopsy and we had to do it now. I came back for the results about a week later and thank god they were benign but he said I have a very large polyp on my uterus that is causing all these problems and he gave me two options. One was to to a d&c and an ablasion, he said that the polyp would return and I would have to go through it all again and it wouldnt take away the pain, and my uterus thicking is caused by abnormal hormones. Second option was to do the hysterectomy, since I had a tubal in 2005, and I didn't want anymore children, he thought that was the better idea. So now we have surgery scheduled for Tuesday October 18(one week from today) and I am totally worried. I have heard horro stories of things happing and then I have heard that it was the best thing ever done. My family thinks I am over reacting and being a baby about it. So I was just wondering if anyone eles had the same feelings, had the surgery...and so on because the closer I get to the surgery date, the more freaked out I become.

Re: Surgery schedule for 10/18/11 and I am getting really nervous

I'm having surgery the same day and having the same anxiety. Really just started freaking out a bit yesterday. Today I feel like I might yell or cry at the same time. Not sure if I'm more scared of surgery or the recovery. I'm busy mom of 2 teenagers and have lots to do. I am bit of a control freak so it's really hard to give up control of my life and depend on everyone else. Ugh...

I am doing the LSH

I'm so sorry that your family doesn't understand. The sisters here do. We are not being babies, or whiners, or hypochondriacs. We're just admitting that it's really scary.

I'm not even sure I'm going to try to sleep the night before. I think I'll try to read or play computer games, just to occupy my mind. I'd rather do that than lay in bed and worry. Good luck! I wish you the best!

Re: Surgery schedule for 10/18/11 and I am getting really nervous

Okay, worry and fear are very real here. The loss of control factor is also a big part. But I want to say, before I had my hysterectomy I was never in control!! The non-stop bleeding, the clotting, the spontaneous rushes of blood that kept me in black slacks for over 2 years. My hysterectomy did not go as the plan that my surgeon and I worked out, as I wanted to stay awake for the surgery. (that much of a control freak) They did have to put me out, I woke up...knew my uterus and ovaries were gone and KNEW I would never have to wear black again unless I wanted to!! It was an exhilarating feeling!! It has been almost 7 years. I do not miss any of it! I did not use hormone replacement to help me with the menopause. I just told myself it wouldn't be bad, and it wasn't. I guess I am lucky. I just wanted to tell you, look forward to your surgeries...Tomorrow will be the first day of a whole new chapter in your life!
