Abdominal Binder alternative?

I would really like to have an Abdominal Binder, but my husband and I are really short on money lately. Does anyone have any alternative ideas that might work in a pinch?

Re: Abdominal Binder alternative?

Do you have medical insurance? The reason I ask is because I got mine in the hospital. Woke up for a moment in recovery as a team of nurses were strapping me in one. I then asked my day nurse for a spare before I was discharged. The cost for both was included in my surgical costs.

Good luck to you!

Re: Abdominal Binder alternative?

I was given mine in the hospital also. Ask your doc at pre op cuz it will have to be ordered to be covered by insurance. I got an extra one too cuz my heating pad sprung a huge leak and soaked me the morning of discharge so I needed a dry one to go home.

I have seen others here talk about using a wide ace bandage. You could also look for some support panties, but these aren't usually cheap either...

Re: Abdominal Binder alternative?

I have no idea if they truly work the same, but I called and spoke to the surgeon's nurse --- she said they DON'T recommend the binders, but said the tummy-support/spandex underwear are nice. I'm still pre-op, so can't vouch for it, but might be a cheaper alternative.

Re: Abdominal Binder alternative?

I agree, ask your doctor about it and the hospital may provide it. When I had my surgery I didn't have one. I did just fine without one. Your doctor may say you don't need one.

Re: Abdominal Binder alternative?

Definitely echoing the 'check with your doctor' sentiment!! I got mine in the hospital, didn't have to ask for it, it's standard issue there for any abdominal surgeries. As another poster said, perhaps 'regular' support garments would be a good alternative as well. If nothing else, you could also use a couple of wide ACE bandages -- I don't know how they compare price-wise, but your hospital may have those readily available as well.

Hope this helps!! I'm glad I had my abd binder but I'm not sure I would've made the effort to purchase one myself if the hospital hadn't provided one for me. I wore it for about two weeks and I felt more comfortable with it on, especially after I got back home and was resuming normal activities.

Best wishes!!

Re: Abdominal Binder alternative?

Again, check with your doc first. Mine is very anti binder, she says she sees more infection n damage to skin, muscles a and even organs. Always follow your docs instructions. : )
