How long was your hospital stay?

I am having LVH on Oct 25. As I've been reading through the site it seems there is a huge variation on the length of the hospital stay. My dr has booked me for one night. I also suffer from severe anemia because of the blood loss over the last few months. I have been hospitalized during that time and had 3 blood transfusions because my hemoglobin was so low they were set up for a heart attack which they thought was imminent. I am currently on 900 mg of iron a day, 10 mg of progesterone and have a standing prescription for cyclokapron which I have taken four times to deal with bleeding. Somehow it just doesn't seem like less then 24 hrs (my surgery is at 12:30 p.m., hospital discharge is at 11:00 a.m.) will be long enough. Any thoughts or suggestions? Will I probably be staying longer?

Re: How long was your hospital stay?

I think they book it that way so they dont have to argue with your insurance company. If they need more they can always keep you for longer. I was readmitted on my 5th day post op for another night because of an infection.

Re: How long was your hospital stay?

Agree with the above...before you go in it's all about the insurance pre-approval...once you are in, you stay as long as you are having any complication.
For me: IN at 9am day 1 and OUT 9pm day 2.

Re: How long was your hospital stay?

I had a TAH/panniculectomy and I stayed 3 nights, which is right in the middle of the 2-4 night "normal" stay for my procedure. Having a hip-to-hip-incision was a little harder to deal with.

As the other (((sisters))) have said, they book you in for a tentative number of nights but they won't let you leave until you reach whatever benchmarks they have. Sometimes they won't let you leave until they hear gas bubbles in your abdominal region, and they will certainly want you to urinate on your own (without the catheter). They also may want you to have a meal of solid food to see that you tolerate it well.

to you. I hope that one night is sufficient for your stay!

Re: How long was your hospital stay?

i had an LAVH last tuesday. i checked in at the hospital at 5:45 am. i left at 5:40 am the next morning. i was scared to death, but everything about the surgery went much better than he expected. it was suppose to be a minimal 2 hr surgery. i was told he did it in 1 hr 15 min. it took much longer for me to wake up than what the surgery lasted. it ended at 11 am. i didn't wake up til after 1pm. for some reason, i just can't wake up right away when morphine's involved.

i was scared to death to leave so soon - bc i felt so weak, etc. but once i was home, i was up on my feet, walking around & stuff (slowly albeit), on my own. i sent my parents home and was fine for 2 hrs til my son got home from school. i honestly was glad i went home when i did. i've had no complications whatsoever.

good luck to you with your surgery............and i'll keep good thoughts on a speedy recovery for you!!!

Re: How long was your hospital stay?

I went into the OR at 8am and was discharged at 3pm. I was nervous about going home the same day but it worked out great. I was more relaxed at home and able to rest better.

Good luck!

Re: How long was your hospital stay?

Thanks for all the replies and good wishes, everyone. I'll be alone the first day I'm home for a few hours till my son is home from school but we have a community group here in the building who will only be a call away if I need them.. I don't have to worry about insurance as I'm in Canada, insurance here usually only means you'll get a private room instead of a standard ward. I have a high pain tolerance level so I'm thinking I'll be okay if they do send me home but I'm hoping for a two day stay at least, less to worry about then. I have a tendency to take care of everyone else before myself.

Re: How long was your hospital stay?

My story sounds very similar to yours. I was severely anemic and had 3 different blood transfusions - 7 units of blood - over about two weeks in May. I was on high doses of iron for several months. My hemoglobin was down to 4.5 and they were worried about organ failure for me, too.

I had my DvH on July 6. I was in the hospital for 3 nights when I was originally only supposed to be there for 1 night. I think I stayed the second night because of the amount of blood I lost during surgery. They checked my blood levels three times daily while I was there, starting at 5:00 AM each morning (lucky me!), but it wasn't too bad. I'd rather have been there already instead of having to come back to the doctor's office to get my blood levels checked.

I'm really glad I was there for the third day when I had just awful nausea all day. They were able to give me nausea medicines and supply me with popsicles, etc. once I started feeling better. It was really nice having them there when I felt so yucky. I ended up going home on the fourth day.

I would MUCH rather have been there for those days than have been at home. I had wonderful nurses and doctors, a private room, and my stay was quite comfortable.

I feel wonderful after this surgery and most especially after getting my anemia under control. I was so short of breath and tired when I was anemic, it is nice to have so much energy now!

If you have any other questions, let me know. I was so surprised to read how much your story seems to parallel mine!

I hope your surgery and recuperation goes as smoothly as mine. Good luck!

Re: How long was your hospital stay?

It's great to hear from someone who has gone through exactly what I'm going through. Anemia sucks! I am so tired all the time. And my building manager decided to do unit inspections and was not happy mine was such a mess(there wasn't garbage just lots of laundry and hand prints on the walls) but I'm so tired all the time it's hard, so she's given me until 5 days before surgery to get it to her standards and paint the whole place. Arrrgh!

Did you have to have any transfusions right after surgery?

Do you think that the anemia slowed your recovery or didn't make much of a difference?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I think about it more. : )

Hi, I will be having an TAH/BSO on 10/27. My doctor said I will be in for 4 days go in on Thursday come home on Monday. I checked my insurance website to see what they had to say about my admission and they had me listed for 2 days. From 10/27 till 10/29. I guess they have to do it in two's. Thanks for your information.
