Is a 13 cm ovarian cyst too large for a csection type incision?

I was diagnosed with a 13cm cyst in my right ovaries. Dr says it looks suspicious but that an oncologist will only be on call, neither thinks it is cancer. My Ra125 or whatever it is called was at 13 and my pap was fine.

My question is this . . it is 13 cm, or was two months ago. No further tests have been done. She says she can do this through a horizontal abdominal incision, like a csection. Is that really possible? She is doing a total abdominal hysterectomy and removing my overies because I am 47 and premenoposal anyway.

Has anyone here had one this large removed through a horizontal incision?

I haven't had a cyst removed but have had a section done. I know your cyst is large but most drs reccomend sections if a baby is large so I don't see there being any problem, it's probably safer in the long run then any other way. Sorry I couldn't be anymore help. Hopefully someone with personal experience will let you know how it went for them. Good Luck!

I appreciate your reply, thank you. Good point about the baby though LOL I hadn't thought of that but you are right. It is only the size of a softball, not as big as a baby.

My uterus was 20x18 cm. If they removed that via a bikini incision, I am sure they can handle removing your 13 cm cyst. Good luck with your surgery.

I have a cyst in my left ovary that is 13 cm. too! Dr. told me it and my ovary can only be removed by horizontal incision because of how big it is. (as apposed to lap. or DaVinci) I'm keeping my other ovary. Because I am 39 and done with kids, I am having him remove my uterus as well. I will be thinking of you!

Re: Is a 13 cm ovarian cyst too large for a csection type incision?

I had a large complex cyst on my left ovary (12 x 9 x 11 cm), and I had a vertical incision for my TAH BSO. There was a cancer concern with mine, but thankfully all was benign. Perhaps it is doctor preference. I am sure that they know what they are doing. As the other sister said, they deliver babies via horizontal incisions.

Good luck.
