HRT and sister just diagnosed with breast cancer!!!

Hi everyone. I'm now 5 months post op and doing okay. Just today I got terrible news. My sister was diagnosed with stage IIA brest cancer. With my hyster they took my ovaries due to a family history and cysts on them as well. So I'm on HRT and now freeking out about my sister and her cancer. Is it safe to be on HRT with my sister having breast cancer? She is only 43 and I'm only 38. Oh why can't this all stop?!?!?! I'm an emotional mess to begin with since we can't get the HRT's just right yet but now it's even worse. Anyone else have any similar family history? I plan on contacting my dr. tomorrow but was just wondering what others were told to do in my situation.

Re: HRT and sister just diagnosed with breast cancer!!!

Hi Which HRT are you on? It does make a difference.

There are no studies which show that estrogen-only HRT increases anyone's risk of breast cancer. The women in the WHI Study who had the slightly increased risk were on Prempro, a combination HRT consisting of Premarin (conjugated equine estrogens) and Provera, a synthetic progestin -- the women on Premarin alone did not have any increase in risk.

And regarding family history... I'm sorry for your sister's news and hope her treatment is effective and she's able to live a long, healthy life. Having a first degree relative with a breast cancer history does increase your risk, but it is only one of many risk factors; and, truth be told, most women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history whatsoever (myself included).

In my case, I have a personal history of breast cancer, and I have stayed on bioidentical estrogen through it all and plan to continue it unless someone can prove to me that it's harmful, and so far that has not happened.

We all need to make our own decisions about what's best for us based on a comparison of risks and benefits. In my case, the risks to my health of not using estrogen are much greater and shorter-term than any perceived long-term increased risk of breast cancer, which based on the data available today seems to be nonexistent. Talk with your DR about your own risks and what is best for your overall health.
