Waiting for Surgery Date

Hi,

I am 51 years old. I had my annual physical in September and my primary care physician felt something she thought was a fibroid during the pelvic exam. An ultrasound and CAT scan revealed that I have a large abdominal mass (13.6 cm transverse, 16 cm in height and 9 cm transverse). It appears to originate in the left ovary. I met with the gyn/surgeon on 6 Oct. She told me the mass was so large that they would have to perform a TAH and BSO. Now I am waiting for a surgery date. I waited for a week and called back yesterday to get an idea of when I could expect to get a date. I realize that the doctors have to coordinate schedules (the gyn/surgeon will be operating with a gyn/oncologist). I am interested to know what other member's experiences were in terms of getting a surgery date?

Re: Waiting for Surgery Date

I saw my Family Doc in June.
Had an Gyn exam then ultra sound.
She sent me to A Gyn specialist.
Had to wait 2 months to see them.
I saw her RN first for more test.
I had to wait 2 more months to see the surgeon.
All during this time I had no date.
Last Tuesday I finally saw the surgeon and she set me up with my date..
This Tuesday.
So after 5 months I am getting my surgery.
Now I will say that I could have went with another surgeon but I wanted to wait for the best in our area that does DaVinci.

I was expecting to wait for up to a month after seeing the surgeon but she made the surgery happen ASAP because she said I am a high risk for bleeding out.

I hope you get a date soon....
In our area it takes about 2 week to a month to get a surgery date at the local hospitals...

Re: Waiting for Surgery Date

That was pretty fast. I guess there can be quite a bit of variation depending on circumstances. Good luck with your surgery.

Re: Waiting for Surgery Date

IT varies, depending on the Surgeon Availability. IN my case, I learned in May I needed Surgery, and was told I would hear in Aug. I didn't, so I called in early Sept. THEY FORGOT ABOUT ME..................the gal who books went on vacation and my paperwork got piled up with dust! I went to the office, and when I told my doctor, he was ticked. I HAD an appt the next day. Surgery date isl Nov, but at least I got one. HEALTH CARE IN CANADA SUCKS! You have to be on top of things all the time, or you slip thru the cracks.

Re: Waiting for Surgery Date

I heard back from the surgeon yesterday, and got some encouraging news as well. Upon further evaluation of my case, she is going to perform a cystectomy laparoscopically, removing the left ovary and the mass, but leaving the right ovary and the uterus. My surgery date is 8 November.

Re: Waiting for Surgery Date

I am going for my pre-op tomorrow, office manager told me they do DaVinci surgeries on tuesdays, the hospital where I am going has just been certified a few weeks ago to do the Robotic surgery,LRAH, Is what I will be having
I am also waiting to hear from the insurance, they have approved, ablation and colonoscopy so I am hoping this will be alright.I am to tell the intake nurse that it is a 23 hr observation, that way our deductable is less, Im sure if there are complications it will be ok'ed for longer..
I have my list of questions for the Dr if I can get a word in edgewise, the guy likes to talk, If I have to I will lay the list out in front of him and have him give me answers as he goes...My surgery isnt for another 6 weeks , but it will go by quick
