Re: Dr. says go home 2 hours after lap. surgery.

I would trust what your doctor says -- his advice is based on his personal experience with his patients, after all!! Before I had my LSH, 'people' were telling me there was no way I'd be back to work in two weeks, even though my doctor promised I would be -- he said I could go back after one week if I needed to. After reading others' post-op experiences I began to get skeptical, but I talked to a few other women who'd had theirs done by him and they agreed that, having had the same procedure, they were back to work within two weeks. And so was I!! So trust the doc, he knows his 'track record'. Of course if you don't feel ready that soon there are other options, but don't disregard that possibility, either.

Best of luck to you!!

Re: Dr. says go home 2 hours after lap. surgery.

Well, I don't like the sound of that. I am so sorry to hear that. I had a lap in june and was home two hours after. But I had a lavh the laporoscopy done also she burnt off adhesions. I stayed overnight and was even given option to stay again. I was in no shape to go home after. At all. Nor did I feel up to it the next morning..
Maybe find out from your insurance if your allowed to stay longer on their end of deal and talk to ur doc about ur concerns. I hope he keeps you. Sounds like he is one of those docs that is big on thinking this is no big deal. my gyn was she said I'd be cooking dinner and not on bed rest but limit activities. Mind you though some people are, every one is different. Me, I am on rest. Major rest. Trying to stay glued to couch.
Good luck sweetie

Re: Dr. says go home 2 hours after lap. surgery.

I trust myself with my care more than I trust my doctor.

I respect him for his medical degree, but he is not the one that had abdominal surgery.
Mine asked me if I wanted to go home 20 hours after surgery.
I said "no way." I stayed 2 nights. I think I could have gone home within 12 hours, but that would a bit scary for me.

Of course you will find people that have done well with going home 2 hours post op.
Goody for them.

I wonder what would have been the outcome if a slow bleed would have turned into a large one within 4 hours.

It doesn't hurt to stay in the hospital for 12 hours..IMHO that would be the minimum time for observation post surgery.

How long do they give men as far as hospital stay after prostate surgery? Penile surgery??? 2 hours??? If so, wow.

If my doctor insisted that I go home after 2 hours, I would definitely cancel the surgery and get a different doctor.

Just me.

Re: Dr. says go home 2 hours after lap. surgery.

I had the davinci and was in 2 nights. Honey... get a second opinion... that's my opinion. My blood pressure was too low after surgery for me to go home and also, I had not urinated. My doctor said that before I could leave, I had to urinate on my own and pass gas, as well as eat solid food.

Re: Dr. says go home 2 hours after lap. surgery.

I went home the same day as my surgery. I'm glad I did! I went into OR at 8am and was discharged at 3pm. It would have been earlier but I spent longer in recovery due to nausea from the anesthesia.

I was glad to be home. I was much more comfortable at home. They removed my catheter before I was awake from surgery. I did not need to go home with one. I hadva great recovery! I was up and around the very next day. Actually, my husband went back to work the next day so I was on my own with our 5 kids. LOL

Re: Dr. says go home 2 hours after lap. surgery.

Well, I had my pre admittance appointment today and feel better about it all. It turns out the nurse today is a lady I know from somewhere else. She said the doctor is pretty awesome and that he did her hysterectomy one year ago. She talked with me about how glad she was to have gotten it done, pain was minimal for her, that she spent the night but would have been fine going home the same day. She described the procedure in pretty great detail. Turns out she used to assist this doctor in the OR so she's seen the procedure many times. She said she has never seen this doctor do anything out of line in the ER and has a great track record. She even showed me her naval scar from the laparoscope. I could barely see it.

I'm wondering if I misunderstood the doctor when he said 2 hours, because in my orders it says I will stay one night, unless all is well and I want to go home.

Then I talked with a dear friend of mine who had a surgery done by this same doctor. She said he's a very, very caring doctor and has every confidence I will be in good hands. She has told me this before, but I needed to hear it again. She also addressed all my fears without me even telling her what they were - dying, leaving family behind, maybe my pain is tolerable so maybe I shouldn't do this, what will it feel like to have the option to bear children gone, etc. She had a hysterctomy several years ago and is very happy she did.

I'm feeling more comfortable with all this. Of course that could change in a moment, as my emotions are all over the place these days.

Thanks for all your opinions, they really help!

Re: Dr. says go home 2 hours after lap. surgery.

You have to understand that 1 1/2 hours post op is barely waking up.
I was still "high as a kite" at 2 hours post op.
When that wore off, I had the pain to deal with.
You might have misunderstood, because 2 hours is barely any time at all.

Good luck.

Re: Dr. says go home 2 hours after lap. surgery.

Sounds like you have reestablished your confidence in your doctor and with good reason. I came home the same day but you still have to agree before the doctor will let you go. They want you to be absolutely sure. My doctor and the wonderful nurses lectured me and my dh before releasing me so I hope all goes well. Before you know it, you will be home and on the road to recovery.
We will all be thinking of you:-)

Re: Dr. says go home 2 hours after lap. surgery.

My LSH took 1 1/2 hrs. I spent about 1 1/2 hrs in recovery. Then was moved to a discharge area. They got me up, to the restroom, made me eat & drink, & got me dressed & I was out of there. What scared me was I got nausiated & sick, but they still sent me home. Although I was throwing up. But anyway as far as your question, my dr had told me no longer than 4hrs would I be at the hospital. And she stuck to it.

Re: Dr. says go home 2 hours after lap. surgery.

I can only tell you about my experience.

I had TLH Sept 29 and stayed overnight. After the surgery, I woke up and would fall back asleep again right away so spent a couple of hours in post op.

I did not have a catheter left in after the surgery but they did do a bladder scan and I had to pee in a measuring tray a couple of time to determine how much I was voiding. This wasn't really a big deal.

I didn't need any morphine and just took tylenol and an anti-inflammatory. The surgery was at noon and last about an hour and a half. By 5:00pm I easily could have been comfortably at home so it is certainly possible (although I was still a bit doopy from the anesthesia). I wasn't able to sleep well at the hospital with all the nurse checks, etc., so would have loved to have been home.

Good luck to you and sending hugs your way.
