Smoking and Surgery

I am scheduled for Surgery, and I smoke. I know I should quit, and have tried all without success. IT IS AN ADDICTION!! I am concerned about General Anaesthetic (sp?) as a smoker? MY anaesthologist said I should make an attempt to quit, but did not say I can't have the surgery because I do smoke. He said that I can't smoke 48 hours prior to surgery (and I won't). I am wondering if there are other smokers out there who have had TVH and if they experienced any problems. IT scares me, and I think HOW STUPID I AM to smoke. ANYONE who is NOT a SMOKER can't possibly understand the addiction so I need to hear from SMOKERS ONLY. Thanks.

Re: Smoking and Surgery

I get ya. Heres the thing, I am in health care and am a smoker too. I have been trying for a year to quit chewing gum, the electronic gizmo, ect. I have had several other surgeries and had no problem. Bring some nico gum, perhaps ask for a patch, I probably wont quit right before as my nerves will most likely be jumping.

Smoking and Surgery

Hi Annie - shh, don't tell anyone - but I smoked upto & including the day of my surgery. Now I don't condone my smoking & I don't encourage you to smoke on the day of your surgery. But don't stress about it either. As I said, I smoked & my recovery has been great. However, initially after my surgery the last thing I felt like doing was smoking & since I was mostly bed ridden - I took the opportunity to give up! It's hard but it's been 7 weeks! Good Luck hon & don't stress about it. Ps. I'm nearly 41. X

I also am a smoker and i didnt smoke for 24 hours before surgery the doc told me i needed to quit because you can get blood clots i have a history of them anyways and smoking just adds to the risk of blood clots so i encourage you to listen to them i am smoking again but have cut back alot 1 pack lasts me 4 days and i used to go through a little over a pack a day good luck!

I have uterine cancer and there was noooo way i would have been able to quit. i hope you can before the surgery or at least cut down, but if u dont its not a biggie. Hugs...Oh I had my hyster on the 13th, was released form the castle on the 14th eveing and started smoking immediatly..lol... But its interesting it did not bother me at all in the castle not too

Re: Smoking and Surgery

Another smoker here. My doc requested that I cut my smoking in half. She stated that smoking delays healing. I have been smoking for 30 years and I have had several procedures during that time with no problem. However,....I do intend to give the whole quitting thing another try during my recovery period. Seems like a good time. If I'm going to be miserable anyway......

Re: Smoking and Surgery

Hello fellow smokey bear. My anesthesiologist told me I should quit before surgery too. He said it slows healing, could cause infection and blah, blah, blah. I just looked at him and asked how long after surgery till I can go out for a cigarette...lol. I guess he got the point I was trying to make, he said ask your dr and you'll have to sign papers to go out since you can't stay on hospital grounds to smoke. I said no problem I've seen the smokers wall, I'll hop in a wheelchair and head out there. Signal dirty look at that point. He went on to complain about my obesity. I said imagine how fat I'd be if I didn't smoke. Shot down twice, I probably wasn't his favorite pre-op patient that day.

Re: Smoking and Surgery

I was never told to quit smoking at all...it wasn't even mentioned as a possible complication. I smoked all the way to the door walking into the castle.

I'm not saying you SHOULD smoke...we should all quit, but we all know that, right? I'm just saying it wasn't an issue for me. Good luck sweetie!!
