Re: Anemia & surgery

I am heading to the dr's office for another shot.
Assuming it will be another depo provera, but will update.

Re: Anemia & surgery

Dr prescribed my iron tabs. 325 mg that I take once a day with 500 mg of C. Pharmacist told me that he has seen women prescribed more than one tab a day.

One of my docs thinks that I'm less anemic than he would have expected. We decided that part of that is I have a fairly good diet but the other part may be from cooking in cast iron.

Re: Anemia & surgery

65mg of iron is not a lot to replace the iron level. I am currently on 900mg but my anemia was severe. My level was 41, it's suppose to be between 115-165(Canadian readings). I take 3 pills a day at 300mg each plus I had 3 blood transfusions to bring my levels up.

Talk to the dr and ask for another blood test to check the level. This will help put your mind at ease and your dr can advise you how to boost your level before surgery so there is no fear of it being cancelled.

Re: Anemia & surgery

They gave me a 2nd shot of depo provera.
My 2nd shot in not quite two months.

Let's hope this stops the bleeding, because the bleeding is going into week three, and is getting VERY heavy.

Although I was anemic prior to getting the first shot, my pre-op CBC (done early Oct) showed that I was no longer anemic.

So, the dose I am on should be just fine, as long as the bleeding stops.

65mg twice a day is something like 700% of the RDA.

Re: Anemia & surgery

That's great that you got the CBC results saying your not anemic anymore.

And for sure that dose should be enough, it might even give you a boost for surgery.

Good luck with everything.

Re: Anemia & surgery

I was anemic prior to, but we only discovered 1 week B4 surgery. Doc put me on iron, and still did the surgery, BUT he also perscribed Iron into the IV a few times, the next few days (that was not a nice feeling in the IV, it looked & felt like black sludge) and he had blood drawn daily for the 4 days I was in, to make sure my numbers were going up. So, talk to the doc.
