Re: last minute cancellation thoughts

Missbell, you're not alone in wanting to be sure of what you're doing and you're not alone with your gyn and surgeon being annoyed/angry with you.

I have visited two oncologists and two ob-gyns, all of whom said they could do my hysterectomy. I was and still am determined to have a surgeon who respects my process and treats me respectfully. This is my body and I have decided that no is going to tell me that I'm taking too long to decide or that I've asked enough questions, or that I'm just stalling, trying to make me feel silly or guilty. It's not their body and I just don't care what anyone says.

Problem is, it's been a mixed up process with my surgeon and now the surgery that was scheduled for this Wednesday morning has been backed up to Tuesday late afternoon. I think they figure I won't back out now that I've gone this far but I'm tempted to just tell them 'I'm sorry, but I understand that afternoon surgeries aren't in a patient's best interest so we'll reschedule to when you can find a morning spot'. But then my gyn will be disgusted and angry with me, and my surgeon will most likely invite me to find another surgeon. Then it'll be another month at least and I know I have to have this surgery (cancer).

So you see, I understand what you're going through but I think it's important that things feel right. At this point my docs probably think I'm either really flaky or avoiding things, or worse. What can I say? It's such a serious operation and I want it to be right.

I googled afternoon surgery and found this: http://www.dukehealth.org/health_library/news/9809 Lots of adverse affects from afternoon surgeries. Not to mention that you end up not getting to your room till 8pm earliest when family has to leave and doc is gone and who's there to advocate for you?

So here I am risking getting everyone mad at me...and thinking bad things about me...and I have to make the decision that's right for me no matter what they think.

LOL

I hope it helps that you've now met another person who feels pushed around and has to learn to stand her ground and take care of herself. If we don't take care of ourself...who will do it for us?? No one.

Re: last minute cancellation thoughts

I am curious what your final decision was? I agree that you should be 100 percent ready before you go in. its a tough road and you need to know that you chose your path in order to get through it. The women that I talked to ahead of time all said 'best thing I ever did for myself', but there are horror stories on the web, and on this site.

For me, I am also 48 years old, i came home from the hospital from my surgery the day I turned 48. For me, it went very well other than some allergies to the morphine.

I will be at 3 months post op on November 11. For me, it was a very good thing. I had pain for 11-12 days, with cramps leading up to it. I also bled profusely. I did not realize how much of my life was affected by it.

I had a tah/bso, and was walking around my neighborhood within two days, and walking 3 or 4 miles within 10 days. I am now running, exercising, down about 12 pounds, and much less swollen. Additionally, it doesn't change my life. during my periods, I would have to double up on everything and still lived in fear of blood soaking my clothes. I couldn't attend a 45 minute meeting.

Now I am pain free, steady in my moods and feeling great. But it was my decision when i went in, and my decision to get well after.

Good luck and let us know.
