Why does it take so long to get a surgery date?

I've had 9 surgeries and only my gastric bypass had a long process. Why is it that the surgery for a hysterectomy seems to be so long? Is it just an issue of where we are located or is it a harder surgery to get insurance approval for?

My doctor and I decided on Wednesday that the surgery needs to be done (abdominal with left ovary removed) and he said they would call me with my surgery date. I'm preparing for a long wait of 4-6 wks, but I'm hoping that the process doesn't take as long. Hoping to hear back from his office soon!!

I'd really like to have the surgery done before I get my next cycle. I'm quite anemic and just had several IV iron infusions and I'd like to avoid losing any more iron through blood loss of cycles so I can go into the surgery with a decent iron level.

I'm sure there are various reasons: coordinating between the availability of the operating room, equipment, staffing and the doctor's schedule too. The robotic assisted procedures are growing in popularity and I was told we had to wait or the robot to be available.

and too not every hospital has the DeVinci machine. so that could possibly be the problem.

Re: Why does it take so long to get a surgery date?

I think it depends partly on how many "OR days" your GYN has, plus how many ORs are available, plus the severity of the problem---plus when the robot is available, for davinci. Some OB GYNs only operate one day a wk, so right there is a big limiting factor. Some ladies wait months, which I can't imagine.

My gyn referred me to the surgeon. I saw him less than a week later and my surgery was scheduled for just over a week after that. It all went so fast! LOL

Hmmm, maybe it won't be an incredibly long process for me then. My ob/gyn is doing the surgery, so I'm just waiting on his office to get insurance approval and call me with a date. Here's to hoping I won't be running into Thanksgiving with the surgery date, but if that's what it ends up being...I am prepared to wait. I have lots of research to do anyway!

My gyn warned me that the surgeon was a "get the job done" kinda guy. She was right! LOL

I hope your wait is not a long one!

I waited seven months for my surgery, anything sooner than that is a bonus

Re: Why does it take so long to get a surgery date?

When I went in, the dr told me I could have it on Wednesday (I went in on a friday), or 5 weeks later on Halloween. She explained that she only does them on Mondays/Wednesdays and had a cancelation for the following week. Thankfully I choose Halloween to give me time to prepare. But i think it all has to do on your dr and hospital schedule. I actually wanted to push mine back to january (because we were slower at work), but she said Nope...lol.

Re: Why does it take so long to get a surgery date?

Well, since I haven't heard back from his office and it's now Saturday, I hope to at least hear from them next week that it's on the books. I don't mind waiting a few weeks, but it would be easier to not be recovering from major surgery while trying to get through the holidays. Thank goodness for online shopping! LOL
