Re: I started my period 4 days before surgery!!

I never stopped bleeding for 20 days before my surgery. Don't worry yourself for a moment. Many of us have constant bleeding and that IS the reason for our surgery. I was even bleeding when they did my evaluation for surgery yuck;(. You are fine don't stress another min. !

Re: I started my period 4 days before surgery!!

I started my period on Monday and had the surgery on Thursday. When I arrived and the nurse said to take everything off and put on the gown, compression socks, and warm socks, I mentioned that I was still having my period. She gave me disposable hospital undies and with a fresh pad. She said they'd just cut them off when they did the surgery.

Re: I started my period 4 days before surgery!!

I had my period as well the day I went in for my TAH and the nurse just gave me a hospital pad and undies. I'm almost 4 weeks post op and everything was fine. My iron was also low it was at 9. Before my surgery I got it up to 19. Going for more blood work next week to see where I'm at.
Don't worry to much, you'll do great.

Re: I started my period 4 days before surgery!!

I just had my LAVH on the 19th, and started my last period on the 17th. A bit anemic that morning according to the blood work, but my doc was fine with both my low iron and my heavy period that morning. They just put a pad between my legs without any mesh panties as I was only in pre-op for 30 minutes before being wheeled into the OR. Good luck!

Re: I started my period 4 days before surgery!!

Thank you so much for all the info. I do feel much better now. I honestly don't know how I would deal with all of this without the help of all of you and this site. Thank you so much.... I am going to think positive, take deep breaths and maybe go buy some new pretty panties. NO MORE PERIOD PANTIES!!!!

Re: I started my period 4 days before surgery!!

I am scheduled for Dec 16, with my hemo recently dropped to 10. My doctor drew blood to see if iron is too low as she feels taking iron pills will not get by blood up in time (plus still on my cycle even though I am taking depro shots). She has discussed an iron transfusion. I never heard of this, but this is a way to get the hemoglobin up faster before surgery. She drew my blood to check the iron to see if I should get this done. I won't know until Monday whether I need to go to the hopsital and have it done. You may want to ask about iron transfusion.

I am taking iron pills twice a day if I can. If you have time before surgery, take Slow Fe. I found it at a local pharmacy and was recommended by my doc when I complained of constipation. Also, was told to drink orange juice to aid in the iron absorption. I don't like OJ, so I eat an orange instead.

Re: I started my period 4 days before surgery!!

I too have the same concern, I asked my doctor about that and she checked my level and said it was still low but improving. She just said that if the level is low, that it shouldn't stop the procedure. But they just need to know. Hang in there, and good luck!
