Pain, bleeding, worried about surgery

I have a large baseball sized fibroid tumor in my uterus, as well as pain. Bleeding at this point is constant, despite being given my Lupron shot three weeks ago.

Today I get a letter saying I need to make an appointment with the doctor. Of course, its a Saturday and no one is around to ask. I'm just hoping that it was somethig that was sent out in error, as I'm not sure if the doctor has enough room in his schedule to see me before my surgery.

I also don't want to find out that my surgery has been postponed or put off again. I hurt constantly. I bleed constantly. I'm tired although I take iron regularly. (my levels are almost 12 at this point - they were 8 in March)

I'm just wondering if anyone has had this - just a month before the surgery - the doctor looking to schedule another appointment? And what could it be for? The doctor's surgery scheduler told me that I didn't need a pre-op appointment?

Re: Pain, bleeding, worried about surgery

I am so sorry you are dealing with this - it must be unnerving to receive something like that before surgery. It does somewhat sound like an automated letter sent out in error. Call our docs office on Monday - hopefully they can straighten it out.

Good luck. Hugs to you...

Re: Pain, bleeding, worried about surgery

I'm hoping it is, and if it isn't that they can schedule something for Thursday, as I need to be in the area for my blood test with the Hematology Onc.

Considering UNC is a big place, I'm hoping that it was just a form letter and it went out by accident, or at worst, its an appointment to go over everything just before the surgery.

Re: Pain, bleeding, worried about surgery - Update

Well, I did call and the letter did turn out to be an automated response, but when I called and was told I didn't need another appointment before surgery - I'm glad I left a message for the doctor's nurse with some questions I had.

Good thing I did - it turned out that the doctor did want to see me before the surgery. As I'm going to be up in the area of the doctor/hospital, I asked if we can do what the doctor needed on Thursday.

He was able to fit me in on Thursday for a final discussion before surgery where we will go over pre-op instructions, etc. (if I need special liquid diet before and bowel prep, etc as these were the specific questions I did ask the nurse) and he will send me for any needed pre-op tests at that time as well as all the other necessary pre-op stuff.

So, while the letter was automatically generated, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I really don't want to put off the surgery. Besides, I don't think I can handle another postponement - I had a meltdown in the hospital when the last hospital decided that they were more interested in getting their money than me getting this necessary surgery.

Also does anyone know if UNC Women's Hospital in Chapel Hill has wi-fi, in case I need to stay more than a day?

Re: Pain, bleeding, worried about surgery

I am glad you have things resolved now. Sometimes things happen for a reason. Moving forward can make you feel better.

Good luck with your pre-op and upcoming surgery.

Re: Pain, bleeding, worried about surgery

Check the hospital website - they should have a tab that says something like "Patient Services". It should tell you if wi-fi is available. I know my hospital has it, though some hospitals only offer it in the visitors lobby or waiting rooms, so the patients don't try to work from their hospital beds. :-)

Re: Pain, bleeding, worried about surgery

I tried that and didn't find anything. I'll just ask the doc that too when I see him on Thursday.

Re: Pain, bleeding, worried about surgery

Again today I'm having problems with my insurance. Each time its put into the systems, it keeps being removed. Its getting tiring and I really can't put this off again.

I'm hoping it has been fixed this time. After I got the call from the hospital asking me again how I am paying my bill, I lost it afterwards. I told the person who to call to get this taken care of and they actually seemed perturbed that I wasn't handling it myself.

After I hung up the phone, I cried for half an hour. Then I went and got all the necessary authorizations for tomorrow and the surgery date (as well as all prior ones) and will have them when I go tomorrow, so I don't get harassed for money again.

I was told this was cleared this time, but that's the fourth time I heard that. *Sigh*

It's not the hospital or the doctor I have a problem with, as UNC is one of the better hospitals in North Carolina, its just their financial people that's driving me batty.

Re: Pain, bleeding, worried about surgery

I am so sorry to hear about your trials. I can only imagine. I still haven't heard if my insurance company has approved my surgery yet, but I still have a bit more time. I'm sure I'd have broken down completely too.
Has your insurance company sent you any documentation indicating your approval? It might be handy to have.
Best wishes to you!
