Keep Cervix or Not

My surgery is Sat 10/29, I'm keeping my ovaries. Should I keep my cervix or not?

Re: Keep Cervix or Not

I was told with the DaVinci vaginal hysterectomy, the cervix goes. Not an option to keep it. You might ask your doctor if he/she takes the cervix as a standard practice.

Re: Keep Cervix or Not

Talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of keeping your cervix, if it is an option for you. This decision should be made with your doctor's input as they know your medical history (pap smears, etc.) and other items you may need to consider.

Re: Keep Cervix or Not

The most helpful advice I received was don't take the cervix unless you need to. You can always remove it later. That gave me some peace of mind that I could change my mind later. However, I also did receive advice from one doctor to go ahead and remove it. I told my current doctor I wanted to keep it and she was fine with that - said it was my choice and she could do it either way for my SAH. I don't know the details of your specific surgery, so don't know which options are available.

Re: Keep Cervix or Not

Ask your doctor. If you don't have cervical cancer than I would keep it.

Re: Keep Cervix or Not

i'm glad you asked this question as i'm also not sure...i am having TAH in 2 days, when i asked my dr about this specifically she said "there is no medical evidence to support the idea that keeping the cervix has any benefit"..however i realized after the fact that she didn't really give me a good reason to take it either. i plan on grilling her some more pre-op! i guess her rationale is that it could prevent requiring additional surgery later on. word to the wise, take a list of questions with you to the dr and write down their answers! i found the thread on "cervical cuff?" very helpful, you should definitely check it out,
it really helped me come to terms with this one.
best of luck to you!

Re: Keep Cervix or Not

I have heard that keeping your cervix possibly helps prevent prolapse of your bladder in future years-something to keep in mind.

Re: Keep Cervix or Not

I would ask your DR MORE questions andexplain your concerns. Im having mine taken with my uterus during my TVH because I've had abnormal paps and I have had 2 very painful colposcopys. So for me , to have it removed was an easy choice. But I think every woman is different. Had I not had those problems I might not feel the same. i think it's good your thinking it through. Good Luck to you!

Re: Keep Cervix or Not

I am wondering about the same thing. I see my dr next week and am going to ask him about it then. My PCP said that it might be a good idea to keep it because it supports the bladder, but I already have trouble with my bladder and leaking whenever I sneeze, cough, laugh, etc. So I am wondering if he should just fix that while he is in there anyway, and if he does, then do I really need to keep the cervix?
