What happens at Pre-OP appointment

Just wondering what kind of tests they do at pre- op for a TAH/BSO with appendectomy? What kind of paperwork is involved? Any information would be appreciated.

Re: What happens at Pre-OP appointment

I filled out my insurance paperwork... was told how much I would owe that insurance did not pay...
I signed consents for surgery.
Had blood work done...
Went over all my meds on what I could take and what to stop for surgery.
Went over my medical history.
I know some women have had EKGs done but I did not.
that was about it.

Re: What happens at Pre-OP appointment

thank you so much. I believe the nurse metioned an EKG and also a kit that I have to use to shower with the night before and then the next morning. You get so much information thrown at you that it is nice to be able to ask questions here and get the answers and piece of mind that is so very important during this stressful time.

Re: What happens at Pre-OP appointment

At my pre-op, I did similar.

I completed insurance information, had an EKG, did blood work, and was given other info on what to expect and items I needed to do before surgery. I was also given instructions for the day of surgery (don't bring valuables, etc.)

Hugs..

Re: What happens at Pre-OP appointment

Funny I was coming on here to ask the same thing. Yesterday I had a pre op visit with my family doctor and he did an EKG, 2 chest Xrays and blood work. I also have a pre op visit with my Gyno next week, I wonder what he will do at the appt?

Re: What happens at Pre-OP appointment

I had mine yesterday and I did all my admissions paper work. Got my bracelet for my blood type, I had blood drawn, got my body wash for tomorrow morning, was told what I could take and what not to take, where to come for surgery, how long it would take, and the important numbers to call the day before. That was about it.

What is the body wash? Is this something for special for a hysterectomy?

Re: What happens at Pre-OP appointment

They told me it was to be used the morning of from the neck down because it was an antibacterial body wash. It just helps clean your skin to help avoid infection I would guess.

Re: What happens at Pre-OP appointment

That makes sense. I will ask my doctor about it at my appt. next week. Thanks for the info.

Re: What happens at Pre-OP appointment

I did not have to do an EKG or chest x-rays ... they checked my height, weight, blood pressure and drew blood to type and match plus do the required pregnancy test. I was given consent forms to sign, had to watch a quick video about the risks of major surgery, was asked if I understood the risks. Then I was given the form for a durable power of attorney - the hospital requires it to be on file - and told I could bring it with me, notarized, on the day of surgery.

I was told how early to show up for surgery, where to go, what to wear, cautioned not to bring anything valuable nor any medications from home, and was asked if I had any questions. Since I have a genetic condition affecting anesthesia, I was given a red hospital bracelet to wear in addition to the regular one and told not to take them off until I went home after the surgery, which was to be a couple of days later. They also made a note to have the anesthesiologist call me the night before surgery to discuss their plan for my procedure.

No body wash here.

-Linda
