TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

I'm scheduled to have a TAH on Nov. 15. My doctor recommended I have my ovaries out however, researching has made me question this. I am not in favor of HRT but at my age I just don't know. Any help or stories from others out there would be greatly appreciated.

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

I too am 47 yr old.....I am having LAVHBSO due to pcos and family history. For me, the decision to take them out was a fairly easy one due to the factors I mentioned. However I am not menopausal, having regular but very heavy periods. I figured that I am not too many years from menopause, and I certainly dont want to have another surgery to remove them later on down the road. However, eveyones case is different....if your ovaries are healthy, and you have no family history, then it would be a dilemma as to whether to keep them or not.

I am not able to take any hormones (previous PE, on lifetime coumadin) and I am quite concerned about the long term health reprucussions of this. I plan to see if i can see a wellness specialist (if there is such a thing), to assess what I can do for prevention of things like heart disease, bone health etc.
Good luck!

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

And forgot to mention.....i am praying that menopause wont be too rough on me! My Mom went through it fairly easily, so I am hoping I will be that I will be lucky. I will keep reading this site to find out more information on those ladies who are managing life without ovaries and HRT.

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

My TAH is due to large fibroids. No cancer history.

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

I am having LAVHBSO at the age of 45 and with the history of Overian Cancer in the 3rd gerenation in my family. I feel its best, I am no where near menopause but have decided to give HRT a try and if its not best then will stop it... My doctor has mention that, there are other alternative as well that will help with Heart Disease and Bone Destiny that if HRT isn't right, and creams for dryness... ask your GYN about these opitions...
Hope this helps....

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

I am 46, and had a TAH BSO due to a large ovarian cyst. I was not in menopause before surgery, and was having regular periods (although a slightly shorter cycle).

For me, surgical menopause was tough. I had originally planned on going without ERT but my life became so miserable with 25+ hot flushes per day, 5+ night sweat episodes, not sleeping, and major wool-blanket brain. I went to my GP and said HELP! She said I was too young for menopause, and that the ERT would be better for my health. The ERT has really helped me quite a bit and I feel much better.

There are many options, and everyone is different. You may want to talk to your doctor. You can also wait and see how your body reacts. From what I read, you have time to make a decision - and you can change your mind like I did if things get too miserable. Also know that sometimes it can take a while to strike a balance that works for you.

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

Since I absolutely cannot take hormones, I am wondering what other options there are, should my menopause symptoms end up being as awful as yours Marestail :O

I am certainly scared about this. Right now, I am kind of convincing myself that menopause wont be so bad.....I am in denial without a plan for the worst case scenario

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

I just had at TAH at 35 and a year and a half later I was in having my ovaries and tubes removed because of ovarian cysts. Tried everything - nothing worked - I was in the ER every month "when I would be cycling." First visit to the ER was $31,000 bc dr didn't know what was wrong with me. Turned out after pelvic ultrasound I had a 5 cm ovarian cyst on my right over.
When I had my TAH - there was no ovarian cancer in my family (it was the only cancer missing). Then in April 2011 my mom's older sister was diganosed with Stage 2 Ovarian Cancer - she had a TAH at 35 and left her ovaries.
I was having monthly visits to the ER, the other visits were between $6,000-9,000. I went to my dr after the first $31,000 ER visit, she told me ovarian cysts DO NOT hurt. I think she was smoking crack!!!! Then I had 2 more monthly visits (with a 3-5 hour wait in the ER waiting room) and I decided to get a 2nd option. Went to a new dr and she - let's get them out. I just had the surgery on 10/20/11 - come to find out I had a 7 cm ovarian cyst in my left fallopian tube that was maligent and my left ovary had a ton of smaller cysts 2-3 cm. They were ticking time bombs. I was already on HRT - Vivelle patch after my uterus was removed in 2/9/10. I have no problem with the patch. There is also progesterone cream that you can get from the health store.
Also, make sure to check out the other post of Hyster sisters for alternatives. I find it easier to find information on this website, then go to my dr and say "this is what I want." I love Hystersisters!!!!!

Good luck and remember we are always here for you!!! Keep your chin up and remember if you do have them removed there are alternatives to deal with the issues that may come up!!!!!

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

Hi, my surgeon is saying I need my ovaries out so it doesn't seem like a choice for me; with the recommendation, has your dr said why it would be best to have them removed then? that might help you with your decision to know his/her reasoning. I hope it all goes really well for you

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

Best of luck zadie!

I'm same age and have just had TAH. My sister, who had an emergency sub-total hysterectomy following complications with birth/Caesarian, kept her ovaries and thoroughly recommended it...

There was some hope that I might only end up with a myomectomy but my doctor talked through Plan B, which was TAH. He recommended taking out the ovaries at this stage because of being reasonably close to the age that ovary activity starts to decrease and he preferred this option (he did explain that there were other schools of thought on this) because it eliminated other risks.

Although I hadn't detected any noticeable perimenopause symptoms (still very regular periods in particular), the post-op biopsy revealed that my ovaries were already shrinking so I guess my doctor was right.

There are certainly pros and cons on both sides and you should certainly talk through these options with your doctor.
