Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

I'm BRCA2positive getting a davinchi with Bso on Monday. Due to my gene I'm getting my overies out. I'm 42 years old, been having mild hot flashes for about a year . I can't go on hrt because of the BRCA2 gene- but will try OTC meds like Estroven and vitamins to help if I need to. My mom has had menopause at age 38 due to chemo for breast cancer. She said it really wasn't that bad. My grandma went through natural menopause and also reports it wasn't that bad . I'm going to go natural and see how I cope. I'm on an antidepressant and anti anxiety meds now so I'm thinking that will be helpful. As for the hot flashes we shall see! Good luck to you! But just remember sooner or later you will have to face menopause anyway ! I'm glad I'm getting it over and done with! hugs!

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

I am 50 and has an LSH/BSO on August 9th - feels like forever ago right now.

I had the option of keeping my ovaries or not. I decided to have them out.

My mom had a very easy menopause and I was hoping for the same.

But at about 3 weeks out I started getting wicked, almost continuous hot flashes, worse at night.

Because I am 50 my gyno said no HRT which was fine by me because I did not want it.

I spoke to my primary care doctor and she recommended a low dose of Effexor - an anti depressant that also works on menopausal symptoms,

I have been taking it for about 2 months and it has been a godsend for me. My flashes are infrequent, and when they do come they are mild. Some have side effects to this drug, but I am fortunate to not be among that group.

Looking back I have no regrets on my decision to have them out, and would make the same decision again even knoweing what I know now.

Good luck with whatever choice you make,

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

Great question and one I struggled with myself before my surgery. I decided to keep mine since there were no signs of cancer and my family history has both heart problems and osteoporosis. i am 49 years old, and struggled with a huge outer fibroid and internal fibroids, an enlarged uterus, 2X the normal size and the weight of my outer fibroid was several pounds! What a relief!

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

I'm 43 and the doctor says he sees no reason to remove my ovaries, but, if he gets in there during surgery and finds a reason to remove them, so be it. I'd rather not go through surgically enduced menopause, but I sure don't want to have to go through another surgery down the road either.

Re: TAH at 47 keep ovaries or not?

After discussion with my doctor and the fact that I already take effexor I have decided to take them out. I have migraines that are caused by hormones and he said I may not need HRT. Time will tell and we will see. I am looking forward to ending these mood swings, severe fatigue and getting back on with life.
